Coucouom ndloMeed for resisting high-rises To the editor: I wish to congratulate the Town of Whitby for resisting, to date, massive concentrations of high-rise apartment buildings in the area. A year and a half ago, our family moved to - W tby from Scarborough. We were iattracted by the beauty of the area: the rolling hills, streams, trees, marshes, abundance of geese and other wild birds. Our reasons for moving were to escape the noise, pollution, traffic density, and to acquire a larger home. I have first-hand experience of the folly of concentrating high-rise apartments in an area. Over a period of 17 years in Scarborough, an ever-increasing number of high-rise buildings ]Let's By James IL Priest James Priest ia a member of the North Anderson & RotepayersAsSOciation. "Let's 'pay' ball." (Yes, sir, Fm going to have a ball with this one ...) West ward councillor Joe Bugelli claims parents of children who play baseball, soccer, swim (or in the case of the new pool, wade), will have to pay much more to participate. Bugelli is all for user fees. In other words, if you use it, you pay to use it. Bugelli will now have to practise what he preaches. He uses plenty of the amenities available to him but pays 33 per cent less in taxes than you or I, as all elected people are allowed to evade paying income tax on one-third of what they are paid (you notice I did not say earn). Let's take a look at some other brilliant proposals put before council that Bugelli has supported or put forth as a motion. We have the "Let's sock it to 'emf" urbanization of downtown Whitby roads. Ya got yer "Let's rip off those older Whitby areas" with market value taxes. Ya got yer 'Tree parking fiasco" to avoid the Robert Nixon Corporate Concentration Tax (I don't think all the bills are in yet for this one, the last I heard it was going to cost taxpayers of Whitby $117,00 -to eharige- the- parking appeared on the perimeter of our subdivision despite the residents' objections. The results were a heavy increase in trafic, and a high increase in noise pollution due to frequent fire sirens from false alarms and police cars. Al this noise was then amplified by a corridor effect from the poor arrangement of the buildings on the street. We also lost the pleasure of viewing sunsets year round from our home. Good residential planning and development should do as little as possble in disrupting the envi- ronment, including the skyline. I would like to emphasize here that I do not object to apartment accommodation. I sympathize with youngcoupleshtoday, with the high cost of housing, and recognize the need as I have two sons in their twenties. I do, however, strongly object to apartment buildings in excess of five to six stories, located on high rises of land, and in number more than one or two in the area of, say, one concession. The view of the Whitby area looking west from Manning and To the editor:n Copy of letter to director of parks and recreation, Town of Whitby. Sp y bail meters. Brilliant!) Ya also~got yer Bugelli/CDS $10-million-plus wading pool now under construction. Ya got yer "Let's turn CLOCA into a develo r, with public funds, which bhe, it or not, he actually supports. How about his plum money as chairman of CLOCA (or is that JOCA?). And ya certainly got yer "Let's bit the seniors with a snovshovel fiip-flop." To be fair, Itruly must say he is a councillor with integrity. He is not one to take advantage of the taxpayer, and seems to bèlieve that both should (forgive me) "play on a level field." The level field, unfortunately, is a 42 per cent raise in pay for Bugelli in three years for his part-time job and a 42 per cent raise in taxes as he continues to dig this big hale for himself. West ward residents and parents of young children in Whitby can only hop for more power cuts to stop the 7-1/2 watt Bugelli light bulb from coming on. I doubt we can afford him for one more year, let alone another three. Those councillors who voted in favor of user fees for Whitby kids who like to play baseball and soccer, etc. sure have a great sense of timing. Mayor Attersley, councillors Batten, Bugelli, Drumm and Buffett disappointed the parents of Whitby and indeed the young athletic hopefuls who mut dip into their pockets to participate in these sports. - Many - chose these activities mainly because of the fact that it is not costly to take part, unlike hockey, surfing and many other sports that understandablv cost a great deal equipment It wasb Thickson is one of a community integrated with trees and little skyline clutter. Let us endeavor to keep it that way, with town- homes and low-rise apartments well spaced throughout the community, for a pleasant place to live. Buildings small enough Dear Sir: I wish that this were a letter I did not have to write, but I am disappointed by the actions of the Town of Whitby. Last week without prior notification, work crews were sent around. to supposedly "prune" trees on residents' front lawns in Otter Creek. Even though these trees are the propert of the Town, we, as stewards of the trees, rake the leaves, remove grass and weeds from the base of the trees, faithfully fertilize and generally maintain the trees. that people get to know one another can encourage a healthy sense of community similar to what is found in areas of single family dwellings. Bob Walters Whitby selectiaon of branches to be removed. Our tree is now half its original size. As someone who appreciates and values the beauty of trees, I am sincerely upset over this. I find it ironic that our previous requests for more trees in the Otter Creek park behind our house have been denied due to lack of funds. However, there are funds available to go around disfijurig trees in our nei borhood.
