In winning the tournarnent, Warriors increased their season unbeaten streak to 17 gaines. Whitby opened the tournamont on July 19 by defeating Beaches 10 -2. In their next gaine Warriors faoed the host Mississauga teain. Last year, Mississauga was responsible for the oarly exit of the Whitby B teain froin the provincials. Many of thoso B teain members play for this year's tyke A teamn. Warriors had flot played Misisuga previously this year, and froin the opening faceof the deternunation of Whitby to avoid a repeat of last year was obvious. The resuit was a 22 - 2 blowout, Warniors' best offensive effort this year. I their last gaine in round-robin play, Warriors, heat Hamoilton Bengals 12 - 2 ini a spirited contest. This win assured Whitby a berth in the chaznpionship final. On the other side of the ladder, howover, an unexpected developunent was taldng place. The normally powerfu Peterborough Lakers, the team Whitby bas faced in every chainpionship final this year, were outplayed by the Scarborough Saints i thoir first tournamnent outing this year and handed a 7 - 2 bass. This was the first bass in tounnament play this year for. Peterborough and it set the stage for a close final. I the dressing room on Sunday, the atmnosphero was tense. Most of the Whitby players had played Scarborough tykes Iast year and froin the gies in this tournainent, they knew they would ho facing a big, fast, hard-hitting teaxn. When the gaine started, Scarborough scored first and the teains traded goals for the first haif of the period. Scarborough was employing a different style of play and the WVhitby teain was off its gaine. WVhitby ended the period with a slim one-goal lead of 4 - 3 and a prospect of losing if they did not shape Up. When the second period started, however, it was a rejuvenated Whitby squad that hit the.floor. The famous "Red Wall" defence was back in place. Froin that point on, every turne the Saints got the bail they were faced with awalof six Red jerseys in the Wihitby end, al ready to keep the Scarborough' players on the penineter of their zone. Scarhorough was ailowed only seven shots in the second period and just three in the third. Meanwhile the Whitby offence tallied another seven goals to win the tournanient by an inipressive 11 - 3 score. After capturing the championship ini the Elora tournament on July 8i the teain of 7- and 8-year-oilds, sponsored by Brooklin Cashway Lumber, won their second consecutive teunnament by -defeating Syracuse 12 -3 ini the final. Whitby won their first game 10 - 2 ovrer Caledon Bandits but had te corne froin behund te settie for a 5 -5 tde with Spartan as Bonnie Scheepers scored with 19 seconds left in the gaine. After:Spartan defeated Calodon 19 - 0! , Whitby faced the, formidable task of having te defeat Elora by at least 25 goals te, finish first and enter the grand championship finals againat Syracuse, the winner of the other pool. Scheepers started the team on the right footing as ho scored the first of bis five goals in the game at the 15-second mark as the team built a 12 - 0 load at the end of the first haif. Whitby added another 13 goals in the second haif. Justin Bennett difference, Warrior Jay Harrison said, 'W. heat thein with passing and botter defence." Assistant coach Murray Down added, "Thoy were- nervous in the first period. We settled thein down during the intermission and got them back te their gaine of strong defence.and superior hall coritrol." Ini the Mississauga gaine, every inember of the Whitby teain scored at least one goal. Leading the Whitby offence was Jeffrey Fraser with 19 points followed closely by Blaine Down with 18 points, Bobby McBride eight scored the last three Whitby goals wvith 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the gamo, with the iast of bis six goals entering the Elora net with oniy four seconds rexnaining on the dlock. The fairy-talo finish set the stage for the grand chainpionship final against Syracuse who were no match for a superior, balanced team. Bennett and Scheepers contunued te, lead the teamr offensiveiy while Rob White, Jeremy F'iher, Ryan Haher and Joel Whitmnarsh stood out in their defensive roles.
