WjJM'Y FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY. MAY 2,1990, PAGE 27 Pomotin awareness at spina healt By Tony Lysyk During Spinal Health Week, May 1 - 7, the Ontario Chiropractie Assocation, through local -chiropractic chapters, promotes. a public awareness program aimed at teach elementary school children proper spinal care. The Durhamn Chiro rCti Society in co-operation wi local school boards, has again this year distributed more than 20,000 'Inspector Spine' cartoon booklets3 designed te encourage children's participation in loarning about spinal health. Most children do not have back pain. However, morte than 80 per cent of Canadians wiil experience back pain at some point in their life, often stemming from poor postural habits and lifestyles during their childhood and adolescence. A fuil spinal examination is vital in identifying mechanical and/or structural imbalances at this early stage in a child's development. Once the imbalance is detected, a correction can be made. A spinal assessment should be performed twioe a year on al children beginning at age 6 or 7. The exam identifies spinal curvatures such as scoliosis (a o pine curving te, one side), kyphosis <an excessively rounded upper spine) and lordosis (an excessive curvaturo in the lower spine sometimes referred te as "swayback"'). Many of these curvatures can be corrected and arrested if found in their early stages, preventing future mechanical and/or neurological irritations. A preliminary 'self-test postural evaluation for your child may be done right in your own home. Have the child, wearing only underwear, stand in front of you, thon have the child bend forward at the waist. Look for the 'bumps" of the spfine to remain in a straight lino and form a omooth curve, with no siqnifficant elevations in either the lumps" of the opine or the nib cage. Nect ask the child to bond from sido tosaide. Again, look for a smooth "C" shape curvo to form. With the. child standing straight, look at the levol of the child's shoulders, hips and knees. These areas shouldbe level. if you find one shoulder is higher or one hip is lower, you have discovered an imibalance in -their alignment which should b. checked professionally. Finish your in-home evaluation by having the child lie down and bring the ankle bones together. Note if the leg lengths are equal. Taing a few minutes to do this simple posture check may allow you to catch an early curie before it gets worse. These periodic spinal health checlks should be considered as part of a complote health progran. The effects of poor posture can b. serious in termns of health and* the woil-being of the individuel. Poor posture can contribute te shallow breathing faulty digestion, decrease strength, SEE PAGE 41 WHITBY Mayor Bob Attersley is investigated by 'bIspector Spine' ( chiropractor GreoyC.
