PAQE 2jWWTBY ý' .E WpEp~~ APL.18,.19;~ PAW centre to get facelift By Mike Kowalski The Pickering-AjaX-Whitby (PAW) animal control centre wil begRetting a facelift. The Town of Ajax has joined Whitby and Pickering in contri- buting $15,000 annually from each municipality over t he next three years to establish a con- struction reserve fund. The fund will total $135,000 when 1992 contributions are made. Money will be used for much- needed renovations te the animal i shelter, specifically staff quar- ters, 1ocated on Thicýcson Rd. N., Whitby. Members of the PAW joint animal control comýnittee were informed of Ajax council's deci- sion at their meetino last week. Last month Ajax 1 council bal- ked at contribut'ngto the reserve fund, but Ajax clerk Albert Hodges teld the commit- tee his municipalit has since agreed te participate. According te, a report presen- ted te, committee, staff facilities at the centre are «seriously lack- ing.Y *Roast Prime Beef (Canada Grade A) New York Steak and Shrimps Broiled Seafood Plate -$99_ tOpen 7das week* Banquet Facibities Available Trhere is* n1 oe toilet and one washbasin for the seven full- time employees and a stûdent employed during the summer. he report says separate wash- room, shower and. chan ge room facilities are required for maie and female staff. An area is needed where staff can take breaks and have meals and a private office is required for the centre supervisor. Preliminary estimates for the imùproved staff facilities are in the $120,000 te $130,000 range.. A number of options are being -onsidered, including an addition to the centre and refurbîshing of an adjacent building now ùé for sterage. Whitby councillor Dennis Fox, PAW chairman, said it is too early to speculate on what form the expansion will take. «Were looking at the entire building, but it's too soon te say what will be proposed,» said Fox. "It could involve staff facilite and the animal area, we dont know at this point."» Fox stressed that the commit- tee had no choice but to ask member municipalities to estabi- ish a construction reserve fund. "If it's crowded with the staff we've got now, itil be even more soU infive ye-ars. "This whole area is growing we've p~t te prepare for the future. Fox said there are no- im- mediate plans te add te 'PAW staff, but did not rule out hiring more employees eventually. The P AW animal contro* centre is jointly funded and operated by the three member municialities. PAW took over responsibility for animal control services from the Ontario Humane Society in 1986. 3 * f f Air Conditioning?»ýl, Buy Now >PAY LABOUR DAY' t4. pmv.,1r990* FOR THOSE WHO WANT THIE BEST *Five Year Parts and Labour Warranty *Carrier Tech 2000 quiet and efficient * TO QUALIFIED HOMEOWNERS OR CARRIER GWVES YO' TO $~~2 2It ~b Offer available April 1, 1990 to April 30, 19901 Cannot be comhined with any other Carrier Promotion.', OSHAWA I BOWMANVILLE ....... .723*O68!ý PICKERING /AJAXI WIITBY..8.668-111... a683577 PETERBOROUGH .,. . . .e. a. m sas@@@ ..un .a ces .a . 749-38 LINDSAY I COBOURG I PORT HOPE a.1à.aloe.26312721 Ssrvlng Durham Reglon, Rosldentlal,, Commercial and Custom Homes 111 INDUSTRIAL DRIVE, UNIT 23, WHITBY EATING & AIR CC Authorized Consumer' as Dealer Evergreenqs I and Shrubs Spring ha.i sprung, and ls Orne for aur annuai & 'Evergre.n adSrub * bonanzal Sa dlean out the trunk, dust off the traier, Ioad Up the kld.- and head for T. ..:::. .
