' Writing- musie for Agnes of Godi By Trudie Zavadovics Myra Whyte had no idea at age five, when she first began piano lessons, that some day she would write the music for a play. But she did know she llked music and music made her feel good - even at five. Myra has had, and given, many piano lessons sinoe then. Whether ini the -backmrund or the forefront of her hife, music has always meant something special te Myra and she has given it something special by developing hier talents. Her most recent work was wrxtmg the musical score for the Whitby Courthouse Theatre's production of Agnes of God wbich plays until Feb. 24. Writing the music for 'Agnes of God& was a positive experience for Myra, one which she hoes te continue witb other plays. Tnr itially, it was not somethmng she was looking for, but she welco- med the challenge. «Garvin Parr (the producer) just calied me up and asked me te write the music," says Myra. "It was good te write for some- thing specific, I often just write MUSIC." Before sbe could write tbe music, she needed to get a sense of the play. "I saw the rehearsals on a Sunday and then read the play. The melody camne and then I wrote it down. It all came pretty quickly,' say Myra. "I had the. whole atînosphere of the tbing and had an exact idea of whati thought it shouldsound like. I wrote it the week between Christmas and New Years.» This project bas also enabled Myra te write in a variety of musical styles rangig' ro mass te folk music. Personally, she loves ail kinds of music. "I like te encompass different styles. I like blues, jazz, pop music. Wben I write, it tends te be a conglomeration. Until ber mqve to Whitby seven years ago, Myra lived in Scotland. She earned a degree in music at the- Universty of Glas- w hand since then she has ugtmusic in school and pri- vately. On stage she bas sun g everything from Iigbt opera and pantomime, te, Gilbert and Sulli- van. Musîcally, she bas done a variety of things witbfrx tbe com- muiyfrom working iitb chl- drenitte playing for tbê seniors choir.p Myra's not sure wbère sbe's goin from bere but sbe's sure enjoyed ber first taste of off off of off off Broadway. 'Tve no idea of wbere Pm going but I do know tbere's more and more rd like te do. "Fm so, deligbted witb the way this play (Agnes of God) bas gone. I've often tbougbt Fd like te write sometgo my own. Itfs nice te bave soebng specific te, work MYRA WRIT, above, wrote and performs the music for the Courthouse Theatres version of Agnei Of God. Free Preen photo Peter Tomblin 1 In Aux THURS. FR1.
