WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1989, PAGE 23 Coaches happy with team play in tournament The Whitby M&M Meats AA team competed in the minor atom AAA section of the 16th annual international AAA silver stick hockey tournament Nov. 23-26. In their first game against the Toronto Red Wings, Whitby found themselves on the short end of a 6-4 outcome. Whitby were confined to their own end in the first half of the game, while unable to spark any kind of attack. The Red Wings dominated and only a fine defen- sive effort by Danny Ricca com- bined with an excellent perfor- mance by Brian'Harrison in net, kept Whitby in the game for as long as possible. The second half saw Whitby's offence catch fire with some fine work by Paul Gray, Mark Haynes, Jason Hotchkiss and Brian Crilly. However, Whitby just couldn't keep the burners going long enough, falling short of tving it up in the third. An organized, hard-working Whitby team played an excellent game against London. Whitby fell just shy in a 4-3 game that could have gone either way. Whitby came up with a strong offensive effort, led by Darryl Lewis Lars Clay, Steven Death and Itaynes. Chris Kerr, Aaron Bryant, Bryden Denyes, Donny Campbell and Ricca ave strong defensive support to osh Evans who came up with several key saves. Gray contributed some fine two-way hockey in support of a 'fine team effort. Whitby might have had a better advantage had :they cut down on their penalties, as they had six to London's two. In their third game against St. Catharines, an exhausted Whitby team found themselves playing uphill the entire game. Penalties hurt Henry hockey team By Rupert Matthews Penalties hurt the Henry Street High School hockey team last week as they lost 3-2 to Dunbarton ,Henry's second loss in as many'games. Henry spent much of the game fending off Dunbarton'shnumer- ous power play rushes. In the first period, both teams tried to establish some offensive thrust, but defences dominated and did not permit many oppor- tunities around the net. The second period saw Dun- barton take charge with a goal from Scott Craig, who made a nice move to fake out Henry goalkeeper Craig Dawson. Dunbarton added to their lead on ·a power play goal from Jeff Bryant. Dunbarton continued to con- trol the puck in Henry's end, taking advantage of many power play chances. Dawson made several spectacular saves to allow Henry any chance in the third. Henry opened the third on a nice goal from Adrien Deveau to pull within one of Dunbarton. Both teams exchanged several shots on net, but with the clock ticking down to the closing minutes of the game, Henry was forced to pull their goalie. Dunbarton capitalized on an empty netter from Matt Carmi- chael that appeared to put the game out of reach, at 3-1. lDaw- son was put back in net to play out the remainder of the game. But Henry once again pulled to wvithin one, on a quick backhand from Brian Muro, off a faceoff deep in Dunbarton's end. With just over 30 seconds left Henry had one more chance at tying the game, but was unable to gain control. Despite the loss, Henry was much sharper than in a 7-2 loss against Denis O'Connor two weeks ago. St. Catharines was just too poweTfî as they ~wrote off Whitby 8-1. Once again penalties hurt Whitby, as they racked up nine to St. Catharines two. The tournament (Whitby's second in two weeks) while not a success on the scoreboard, did prove that Whitby can give a good performance at the AAA international level, say team coaches.
