First, I would hike to congratulate the members of our hockey team on their win against Henry St. High School on Nov. 22 They won by a score of 7-3. On Thursday Nov. 23, a group of students from our school, went to St. Bartholomew's Church to attend a session about teenagers and their problems. A special appearance was put in by Father Terry Gallagher who is very familiar te most IXYC students. Friday, Nov. 24 was a busy day at DO'C. For a $2 donation te the United Way, students were excused from wearing their uniforms. In the afiernoon, a 5;tudent-council o)rganized-ai-band contest was held. Adventurous students were able te show their talents te the entire school body as they lip-synched te differed music. Everyone had a great time and ail those who had the courage te participate should be saluted for their fine efforts. That same evening, a dance, also organized by the student council, was held. Ail those who attended enjoyed themselves. This past Monday, Nov. 27, a Parentfs Night was held at D(YC. Students were able te exhibit their different talents which included skcit presentations. It was a huge success. Finally, this week in the cafeteria, DO'C students have the opportunity te' buy tickets te attend the Gr. 12 dramatic arts production of "Do Not Ajust You Set - This Is Only A Test." Tickets are oly $3 and will be sold on ail three lunches. It is a one-niglit only performance on Wednesday, Dec. 6 and should be a lot of fun, so don't forget te buy your ticket. Henry Street H.S. Twenty below, your nostrils stick together the minute you step out the door and if it's not pouring rain we have a windchill facter of eighty. Ah, the Great White North! With weather like this why in the world would anyone want to go teorioda for Christmas? To tell you the truth, Fm a firm believer that this time of year is an inspiration for ail teachers. It inspires them te pile on as much work as possible so that we students appreciate our Christmas hoildays to the full extent. Talk about essay overload! Henry Street lias experts on topics ranging from Euthanasia te the social criticisms of Charles Dickens wandering the hailowed halls. But, ask them what day it is and the cominon response will be, I don't know. I have an essay due a week from today se it must be Wednesday." Hang in there, gang, only 30 more days until Christmas vacation.! HSHS had a nice break from the usual routine last week. United Way Week was a great success. We were treated te sucker day, zandy floss day, popcorn day, snowcone day and teacher dress down day. The dress down day proved te be the most entertaining. We have a chance te see the real persons bohind those get-ups the teachers usually wear te school. The senior boys' basketball team beat Central last Friday. Congratulations guys! Good luck in the rest of your gaines. Ail three igris' volleyball teams begin their season on Dec. 7. They begin their seasons in Pickering and Ajax. The senior girls have their first tournament in Hamilten on Dec. 9. That's ail for this week, folks! Letes hope we get some snow so we can get out our frustrations on the ski slopes. Try not te worry too much about those assignments and essays, it will ail be ever soon, I hope! Another week bas whipped b y at Trafalgar. They go faster and faster when you're anticipating Christmas holîdays. I think that we had one of the best Career Nights ever. On Monday evening, a wide variety of speakers came, and I heard positive remarks from both speakers and students. It was truly a successf'ul event The exam schedule is now posted, and exams will commenceon Dec. 11. Studying consumes al1 of our spare time. Everyone's hair bas the new "electrocution style" as gris stress out over exams. Don't worry, girls! We'll soon be relaxing on the holidays. We have already started practising for the carol service in chapel. This beautiful occasion involves participation froin both parents and students, as well as some "£offtune» stuif. New songs are being taught under the capable direction of Mr. Southwell. Hras anybody found out who "Polly" is? Come and see what it's al about on Nov. 30. New gym on piriority li'Lst A new library and gmnasium for Anderson CVI and general p urpose room for Dr. Robert Thornton public school are among the projects for 1990 in the capital Porecast by the Dur- hem Board of Education. Construction of the general purpose room, projected to start in June, 1990, will cost $1,388,000. The Thornton project ranks fourth on the board's priority list for what are descri- bed as "non-growth" projects. Another Thornton project, eighth on the priority list, is renovation of the science and art room, expected to cost $120,000. The Anderson project, fifth in priority, will cost an estimated $2,349,700 and will begin in April,' 1990. Anderson's gym and library and Thornton's general purpose room projects are proposeT to open in November, 1990. A public school, as yet un- Mediator appointed for teachers, trustees The Education Relations Com- mission has appointed Fred R. Long of Toronto to act as media- tor in the negotiations between elementary teachers and trustees of the Durham Region Roman Catholic School Board. Long is a mediator with the Office of Mediation, Ministry of Labour, Ontario. In this capacity, he has been involved in assisting negotiations in both a large num- ber and wide-variety of labor relations contexts across the pro- vince. The appointment is made under Section 13 of the School Boards and Teachers Collective Negotiations Act, Revised Ste- tutes of Ontario, 1980. named, in the Grayweod subdivi- sion is proposed te open in Sep- tember, 1991. Design is under- wa on the project. An addition of eight class- rooms and three kindergarten rooms will be constructed at Pringle Creek public school, a project which ranks second in priority on the boards forecast of 1990 funrding for 1991 on "growth" projects. Construction, to cost an estimated $2.56-mil- lion, is scheduled to begin in June 1990 and completed in January 1991. The same schedule lias been applied to a core addition of six classrooms and two kindergarteli rooms at Bellwood public school in Whitby. That project, estima- ted to cost $1'776400, ranks tenth on the growth list. The board bas also projected an addition of 200 portable class- rooms to provide spaoe for 7,000 students. At $34,500 each, total cost is estimated at $6.9-million, with $700,000 of that amount paid bytheProvince. A new high school for Whitby is also on the boardes five-year expenditure forecast. Also projec- ted for the future are new public schools in the Foley, Gore and Master Homes subdivisions, additions to Lieslie MeFarlane and F.M. Heard public schools.
