This was long'beforo the days cf driver's ed classes and helmet laws, even befere trafflec janisl CHEVROLET e OLDSMOBILE Pop pid kils money, the seller showod'hlm how to work the throttle, and my adventurous grandfather'climbed aboard and It didn t take Pop long to realize that while he was now an expert on the gas, the seller had 's neglected to show hlm just where the brakes were! Nothing ho did over slowed hlm down and so ho drove the motorcycle to Sarnia until the machineran out of gas. Popgot afriend to drive hlm honie the bike stayed behind, and tLat was the definite end of my grandfather's two-wheeler day s Pop wsn't the least bit mehanically-minded -- a fiat tire *was a- disaster for hlm -- but it always seemed as if the glorious motorcars ho drove, were the centre of attention at our house. CADILLAC e CHEVY TRUCKS -4 mas. For those cf us left -hore, this one without you la going ta be the hardest one cf ail. The beautiful Buick was tra- ded in one day for a used but very presentable 1964 Chrysier New Yorker. Everything was power-operated on it, an expen- sive option package missing on ail the cars my friends' parents owned. For the. flrst couple of months I was the envy of the neighborhood and wo would sit for hours iny friends and I puttfng tle windows up anc1 onmovmng the seats -and wacing the power antennae trv a t route. I don't think Pop ever figured out why the battery was always going dead. Then camne the summer that a school chum and I tried te raise the $3 -fee for a horseback ride at a nearby riding stable. That was a fairly hefty sum for a 12- year-old then, so after cutting the hedge for a quarter and the grass for 50 cents, we explained te Pop how good thee fNew Yor- ker would look ail washed and waxed. Ho a Bed, and we washed in thorely, thon appliod a coat of paste wax and waited for it te dry_. UnfoIrtunately n one teld us what weuld happen if it were waxed in the sun. But Pop was understandlng, and gave us a dollar apiece novertholoss. Ho didn't even get mad when the car was repainted the following week te cover up the white hazy circles cf baked-on wax. I remember ail of Pop's cars from these days, but, what I remember above aIl is that the always seemed to be filled w=t somethlng.On.-Fridays, they' were stuffed with the gags cf groceries ho bouht (and in the summer when sc col was eut I would got with hlm te the store, wonderful trips that always ended with my allowance and the'newest Charlie-Brown coniic book). Ho had always kept up hie friendship with the theatre pop- corn supplier and whenever there was a birthday or echool evnthe car would be stuffed wt ugo bags cf poporn three foot high that could fil1 the inter- ior with their warm salty smell. Ini spring, ho would volunteer for the Cancer Society fundraisig drives and the black Buick would bo filled with thousands cf yellow daffodils te bo dropped off te waiting sellers. And in December, ho would drop myGrandina and me at the depàrtÎfient stores, and the Chrysler would be filled with boxes and bags that would later be put back into thecar wrapped in the brightest papers with shiny red ws. Pop and hls cars were insepar-, able and it was a bitter day when hie license was revoked due te hie cataracte. My brothers and I drove hlm wherever ho wanted te go. Ho missed his independence fiercely, but ho cor- tainfy d o njoy it w hon I picked hlm upnl my '47 Cadillac. It was the one uxury car he'd nover owned and ho seemed te sit up a little straighter when we drove the big burgundy car down the street.
