They can, howe- ver, be virtual ni ghtmares to the thousands of aduits who have not yet effectively learned to read or write. One in five aduits is fune- tionally illiterate. The Literacy Council of Durham Region is an organization of volunteers who teach aduits to read and write. Now in its tenth year, the council bas 150 tutors, eacb teaching one adult student. "I love readxng and can't im- agne sornebody's life without a book to get lost in," says Karen Burwell, council co-ordinator. "You can't get a job if y ou don't have these skills," says Debbie. "A cashier or a waitress needs to know how to read and write. "A lot of people are afraid to even talk about it."
