WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1989, PAGE 9 Crime Stoppers organizers show appreciation By Kim Hawley With the help of citizens, the media and a host of other indivi- duals and organizations who have added to the success of Durham Regional Crime Stop- pers, 740 criminal charges have been laid, close to 300 people have been arrested, and drugs and stolen property worth mil- lions of dollars have been reco- vered. On Friday, officials of Crime Stoppers took the opportuni to acknowledge and thank all o the people who have contributed to andsupported the program. Crime Stoppers was started in 1986 as the Toronto and Region Crime Stoppers. In 1988, with help from former regional police chief Jon Jenkins, Durham Regional Crime Stoppers was established. Jenkins, who attended the second annual Crime Stoppers Awards presentation, expressed his appreciation and continued support of theprogram. 'f constantly keep in touch with the people involved in Crime Stoppers,"said Jenkins. "1'm proud of what you're doing and I'm proud of the success of the program. I can't see anything but a great future for Crime Stoprs." Jenkins aded, "Without the people of Durham Region, this program would be nothing." Durham's current c hief of police, Dave Edwards, was also on hand for the presentations. "I've long been an advocate that policing is a responsibility of all people.We (Durham Regional Police) can not do it all ourselves. "I'm very proud of our-Durham Region police and its involve- ment with Crime Stoppers. And I'm proud of our Crime Stoppers program," said Edwards. Calling Crime Stoppers a pro- gram "run by citizens for citi- zens," past chairman Cathy O'Flynn said, "This is a program that is good for all people, because it doesn't use tax dol- lars," Through Crimes Stoppers, crimes have not only been solved, but they have been prevented "I believe the program is a deterrent for people thinking of e are committing a crime," said O'Flynn. Sgt. Sandy Ryrie of Durham Regional Police, who co-ordinates Crime Stoppers locally, presen- ted awards to several newspa- pers, radio stations and tele- vision stations in Durham and the surrounding area Ryrie writes the weekly Crimes Stoppers and distributes it to the local newspapers, in- ..cluding The Free Press. He also does several radio broadcasts, and is the narrator for re-enact- ments that are aired on tele- vision stations. Other responsibilities for the Crime Stoppers co-ordinator in- clude manning the Crime Stop- pers telephones, and speaking engagements. Oth er awards went to businesses in the region who have supported the Crime Stop- pers program through monetary, goods or service donations. A citizen board administers the Crime Stoppers program in Durham, which is one of 800 in North America. Reward money is raised through tax deductible donations which can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stop- pers, P.O. Box 54, Oshawa, Ontario L1H 7K8. People can earn up to $1,000 if they call Crime Stoppers with information that leads to an arrest by police. Calls are treated confidentially, and persons cal- ling never have to give their name.
