Free Proe photo Understanding the United Way By Kim Hawley Ministry of Revenue employees who are volunteering their time as captains and canvassers for this year's United Way campaign now have a better unéderstanding of how the United Way helps everyone. At a recent motivational forum, sponsored by Local 340 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), cap- tains and canvassers listened to the words of Shirley Spicer, busi- ness administrator for St. John Ambulance of Whitby, which is just one of the 42 agencies under the umbrella of the United Way. Spicer, with vigor and enthu- siasm, recollected several per- sonal experiences as a volunteer for St. John Ambulance. She recalled stories in which she played an instrumental role in a life-threatening situation. She also told of happier experiences as a St. John Ambu- lance brigade member, such as the time she helped to deliver a baby. She also told the people assem- bled for the forum that in 1990, it will cost $31,000 to put bri- gades on the street. "That's where your money goes," Spicer said. Recalling a fire in the Fenelon Falls area last summer that cal- led for the assistance of the St. John Ambulance volunteers from this area, as well as the train derailment in Mississauga 11 years ago that also called for the extra manpower, Spicer said, "If any disaster happens here in Durham we'll be there. "That's our role in the com- munity. If you need us, we're there." The canvassers and captains representing the 1,800 employees of OPSEU also heard from Lui Greco administrator for the local Canaâian Institute for the Blind (CNIB). Reporting that there are 12,000 people in Durham and York regions who are blind or visually impaired, Greco, who is blind himself, said, "Our goal is to make sure if someone chooses to stay in their home or in a seniors' centre, that they live there with dignity and indepen- dence." The CNIB, with the help of the United Way, goes into the homes of blind or visually impaired people to provide training devices to help those people real- ize that dignity and indepen- dence. Greco also had on hand several devices designed for the blind, such as the brail typewriter, and bingo cards.
