WIUTBY FREE PRESS, En Vogue, SEPTEMBER 20, 1989, PAGE Al A MONTHLY FASHION & BEAUTY REVIEW Fashion Becomes Functional! By Julie Thatcher Goodbye crazy trends, hello wearable style! Yes, fall fashion '89 is taking a new relaxed approach which translates into comfort without sacrificing chic. There is a new freedom in the way we dress that's energetic and alive while at the same time wonderfully feminine and realistic. This fall style has become practical, wearable, and shapes are easier. There's flexibility in the way we mix and match both our basics and accessories. The new relaxed styles are designed to let you stride from workplace to workout in comfort without compromise. According to Whitby fashion designer Jesmond Sammut, "Look for designs that are soft, shoulders that are more rounded as opposed to square. Emphasis is on detail, trimming, the finishing touches, items that create a stronger look." Along with the crisp autumn air comes the winter coat and the most popular coat for the season is the big bathrobe style - loosely belted for spontaneity and movement. The word in jackets is easy, long and lean, and worn over tapered pants or narrow skirts. A wingy jacket, big and bright, is a definite wardrobe boost. Worn over skinny black stirrups the look is sensational! Long on top and narrow below is the proposition rule this fall. The classic white shirt is a fashion staple this season, and can be combined with anything from velvet trousers to a tailored suit. Team it up with a colorful vest for a fashionable layered look. Textures play a dominant role with 'rich to the touch' fabrics such as luxurious suedes, soft velvets and cosy cashmeres. The look is soft with shoulders becoming more natural, fabrics more graceful and flowing. Tweeds have a city sophistication with the inspired ease of classic country. Traditional plaids are spruced up with texture and color. Knee-length pleated skirts are everywhere and mixed plaids in fitted suits give a shaped up look. Mini skirts are passe. The skirt length this season is anywhere from just above the knee to full length. The bottom line in footwear is 'practical' with pizzazz. Shoes are flat or low heeled for walking ease. Matching opaque stockings, colorful or neutral, complete the look. Suede shoes provide a low key but elegant look, for day or night. Pendants are this season's neckware and the hoop earring is back, the thinner the better. Look for belts that are narrow and patterned silk scarves add zest to any look, casual or sophisticated. Takëea walk on the wild side! Animal prints and faux fur provide the fun this seasory with leopard spots, tiger and zebra stripes frontrunners. For evening glamor thé choice dress this fall is velvet. Velvet has taken on a new image, sexy, stretchy and elegant. In black or jewel tones the look is dynamite. The sunset provides the color focus this fall; vibrant reds, burnt oranges, rich rusts. Cool jewel tones of purple, green and ruby lend a touch of drama. Combining several shades of one color group creates a subtly dramatic palette. Adds Sammut, "For investment dressing choose basic neutrals such as black, white and grey. Then add splashes of color for excitement." Men's clothing this season has become more colorful with yellow, khaki and saffron as the dominant shades. The traditional suit is still popular but has been influenced by European designers which give it more flare.
