The chair bas an excellent reputation for quality and bas won prizes at festivals in Britain and abroad. A retraspective, the exhibition comprises 36 paintings opanning a career from 1934 until tdy Aked's paintings fare engaging for their freshness ocf caler and varied subjects -- flowers, portraits, landscapes and stili lifes. Unike other artists who subscribed to the premises of varlous avant-garde movements of their time, Aked opted for an expressive style, rich in form and coler, which finda inspiration in real life and.the real world. Aken began ber art educatien at an early age. Wunning a junior scholarship when she was 13, she attended the Ontario' College cf Art in Toronto where her instructers included Arthur Lismer cf the Group cf Seven and other renowned artiste -- such as Emmnanuel Hlahn -- who taught her how te, sculpt. Whi1è living ini Florida for six months of every year, Aken becarne a mnember of the Sarasota Art Association. (She became preident ini 1942.)
