Ministry sets up master nsurance policy for sports organizations Ontario Sports Organizations can now tap into a province-wide insurance policy, providing reasonably-priced, insurance over the next three to five years, Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Hugh P. O'Neil has announced. The Co-operators Insurance Company of Guelph has been selected as underwriters for the liability insurance prograin. Al 76 provincial sports organizations are eligible for the prograin, developed in association with the Ontario Sports Centre. "This is a milestone occasion for Ontario," O'Neil said. "Our sports organizations wilI be able to get the insurance protection necessary to qualily for funding froi the mninistry. Recognized sports organizations throughout the province will no longer be jeopardized due to a lack of insurance." 'The Co-operators, which received the contract tbrough public tender, will also help the rministry develop an injury/data reporting systein and provide support with risk managment prograins. Inclusion in the prograin will be on a voluntary basis. Sports organizations not using it must still meet mini*mum insurance requirements- to quality for ?:rovincial grants. The prograrn will be in place in early 1989. "Thi-s new prograni, which zny niinistry and Ontario's sports organizations have been woring on since 1986, wfll provide safety in sports and sports protection," ONeil said. The Co-operators presently insure about 27 provincial and national sports organizations. They have 150 offices in Ontario. Out-of-province teains or individuals are eligible for coverage upon request.
