Free Proe photo By Mike Johnston Construction is on schedule. That was the word from George Buckles, senior director of development of Campeau Cor- poration, as he recently led a tour through portions of the $100-million expansion and reno- vation of the Oshawa Centre. Whitby mayor Bob Attersley and member.s of Whitby media joined Buckles on the tour to get a better idea of the project star- ted by Campeau last November. The first new store - Collegiate Sports - opened earlier this month and Buckles said the new When people move they take a lot of items with them - appliances, clothes, momentos. And now, with a service provided by an Ajax company, they can take their trees. Koning Tree Transplanting was recently opened by brothers Joe and AI Koning. With a truck equipped with a tree spade from Iowa, the two can remove and transplant trees up eight inches in diameter. That wouldbe a tree approximately 20-ft. tall. "The most popular trees in Durham Region seem to be Nor- way maples and white spruce," said Joe. The company offers a two-year guarantee that the tree will live because the spade collects most of the routes, said Joe. A hole, 54 inches deep by 74 inches wide, is then dug to plant Zellers store and expanded theatres wYill be open by the end of this year. "We are on target for a Novem- ber, 1989 opening of our new Zellers complex and an early December, 1989 opening for the Famous Players eight-plex cinema," said Buckles. The centre now has four cinemas. The cinemas, which will have a separate entrance from the mall to eliminate the long line- ups, will range in size from 250 to 400 seats. The company also buys trees which are put in a holding yard where they are stored and put up for sale. Because the spade collects most of the roots, Joe said trans- planting can be done year-round. After transplantng, guide wires are installed to make sure the trees grow straight. But Joe warns that proper care by the. owners is also required. Koning operates in Durham Region five days a week, although Saturday and Sunday hours can be arranged. The business is located on Commercial Ave. in Ajax. The lower level will bouse most of the 130 new stores and services being added to the centre and will feature skylights, beanches and trees. "There will be a constant rol- ling of stores," said Buckles, describing how work on the lower level is to proceed. "We may start the lower alevel by the end of this year and we'll keep the construction out of the way as much as possible," he added. Also under construction is a 17,000-sq. ft. expansison to Eatons which is scheduled te open this fall. Further renova- tions will then be completed dur- in the next 12 months. qe court in front of Eatons will then be closed and a bigger court will be constructed. In all, the Centre will feature three courts, Eatons, Sears' court and Zellers' court. When completed, the Oshawa Centre will have more than 1.2 million sq. ft. of retail space which will make it bigger than Scarborough Town Centre, said Buckles. Plans call for new stores to open as they are completed. A public display on the expansion and tours of the construction site will begin by late summer. "It's great that Campeau Cor- poration is making such a signi- ficant financial commitment ($100-million) as it will keep shopping dollars within Durham Reg'on. • ' e scope of this project will allow for a new level of shopping that will be of enormous credit to the region," said Attersley after the tour.
