Sandy Ryrie Durham Regional Police Crime Stoppers and Durham Regional Police are again asking for the publicls help to solve a number of sexual assaults which have occurred in the Whitby and Oshawa areas over the past few months. At about 12:45 a.m. on Aug. 1, 1988 a girl was walking east on Dundas St. E. in Whitby, just west of the Kendalwood Mail. She saw a man approaching her on the opposite sidewalk, and as he came dloser, he crossed to ber side. When he was beside ber, hie put bis hand over ber face and dragged ber into the bushes. H-e then pinned ber arms with ber jacket and sexually assaulted ber. During the violent struggle, she managed to. bite him twice. Another, sixilar incident occurred on Oct. 27 at about 10:30 p.m. in Oshawa. A womnan was walking east over the bridge on Gibb St. at the Generai Vanier School, when a man grabbed ber. He dragged ber underneath tbe bridge and eventually to a field where she was sexually assaulted. On Dec. 16 at about 11:15 p.m. another female was sexually assaulted in a very violent manner on Bloor St. just west of Simncoe St. at tbe Oshawa Creek. Leukernia numbers "(00osrna il" to reach conclusion By Reme Sotens Ontario riding MP My office bas received tbe report prepared for the Atomnie Energy Control Board entitled "Childhood Leukemia Around Canadian Nuclear Facilities - Phase 1",. This report was prepared to give a Canadian perspective k> a similar report prepared in the United Ktingdom. The report on the first phase of the study examined the incidence and mortality of leukemia anmong children aged 0-4 years who were born to mothers residing in tbe vicinity of some major Canadian nuclear facilities. As one would expect, tbe Pickering nuclear generating station was included in this study. The study included an area within 25 ilometres of eacb facility. In the case of Pickering, the towns of Pickering, Ajax,, Whitby and Markham and the cities of Oshawa and Scarborough were included. The total population of the area was in excess of 700,000 people. During the fifteen years studied, 1971-1986, tbe Pickering area study established a total of 50 occurrences of leukemia in children. This number is in lime with similar population bases elsewbere in the province of Ontario. TIhe occurrence number was deemed to be too small k> arrive at a conclusion similar k> the one reacbed in the U.K. wbere a nine-fold increase in tbe nuxuber of childhood leukemia deatbs was noted.
