K Court date- postponed- A Toronto mnan charged with the assault of a 16-year-old Whiby girl was uinable to appear intby povncal court last Frdybcause he had been in a car accident. Court was told that Christo- pher Oral Campbell, 18, was in Sunnybrook Medical Centre due to injuries received in the acci- dent. He was to'be discharged sometinie this week. He will appear in court July 14 to set a date for bis trial. Camnpbell was arrested after a 16-year-old pirl told Durham Regilonal Police she had been assaulted in a Whitby park last Sep tmeber. Then in April this year, the girl told police the man called. her and said he would show pictures of the assault to the girl's parents if she did not meet him. The girl then met the assai- lant, police say. Campbell h as been charged with forcible confinement, sexual assault and extortion. G;rant req;Cuelst rej ected Durhami Region council has turned down a $3,000 grant request fromn the Multicultural Council 0f Oshawa and District. Council voted 17-7 last week to reject grant money which would have ~ used to publish a referenoe kit te celebrate the organization's tenth year. Oshawa councillor John Aker indicated regional council's policy has been not to a pprove grants to organizations for which the ReRion is not financially respon- "Once you open the gates to grant ' y t a *rgonal level tere will be no end to it," said Aiker. But not sîl councillors agreed. * "That policy has been broken before.Wat are you playing here, 'eenie, meenie, minie mo,' you get the grant and you clon't,>"e said Oshawa councillor Margaret Shaw. As for Whitby representatives, Mayor Bob Attersley and council- lors Marcel Brunelle and Joe Drunin voted against the grant while councillor Tom Edwards approved it.
