By Debbie Luchuk Durhamn Shoestring Perfor- mers' recent children's play 5Wooster Without Wednesday,', written by Whitby's Ken Bond, was a truly niagical experience for ail, children and adults alike. The play focused on two ctli-. dren's belief in, and love of, their stuffed animais. Through a inagical toy box, on a magical night, the children's stuffed animais came to life, and could only stay «real" if th~e ebjîdren could believe in them and believe that there could be two Tuesdays in the same week. Otherwise, a villain rat would eat them (after returning to their stuffed form) and terrorize the family. Tanya Read as Young Se phiianie, and Robbie Coutie as ber brother Donovan, were com- pletely believable' as the in- nocent, ' imagjLnative child owners of the animals. Lanie Anderson, Jennifer May- bee, Peter Derry and Ronda Davies were the doil, rabbit, bear and clown, and enthralled the children of the audience with several catchy musical numbers. Ken Bond himseIf played the villain Ratso, and had a few of the children in* the audience truly afraid of him. The actors moved into the audience at varlous tumes during musical numbers, making.- the play an interacti've experience, andin aking it difficult to escape becoingInvolved in the play. A wonderful musical score, composed by Ellen Imie of Brooklin, was innovative and a good blend of musical tempos and styles to appeal to aIl mem- bers of the audience. She played the entire score without notes throughout the play. The only drawback to this wonderful play was its ending, which was too abrupt, and left the audience wondenny whether Ratso and the "force ofunbelief' were really vanquished. 'Wooster Without Wednesday,' is a fir st for Bond as writer. and for Ellen Imrie as p lay corn ser. Judging fromn the h igh quality of this production, both should seri- ouslý consider writing further plays and scores together, and see this production in print. The play had abrie run -May 5, 6 and 7. Perhaps the Shoe- string players might consider, at some time, more performances, even in différent settings such as school stages. More- magic, please!
