Vikings take season opener Oshawa Vikings began their regular season in rugby with a 12-10 win over Toronto Lions on Saturday. Dave Stone scored the try for the Vikings first team, with Mike Cl aon icking two penalaties and adding a convert. The second team defeated Lions 12-4 as Jeff John had a try and Ian Thompson kicked two penalties and added a convert. Vikings' newly created third team rolled to a 29-4 win over Lions for an impressive debut. Gareth Stone scored three tries to lead Vikings, adding a con- vert. Gareth Pettigrew scored a try, kicked two converts and one penalty. Mark Kaminski had a try. Vikings host the Chris Krausse tournament at Lake- view Park this Saturday. April 27-30. Dowson's performance in the girls' _ed 10 and under division earned er the female high point trophy for her division. She was one of 29 swimmers from the Whitby club at the meet which attracted 1500 swimmers from all over North America. Dowson won the 50-metre, 100m and 200m freestyle events, the 50m and 100m backstroke, 50m fly and 200m individual medley. She was also second in the 100m fly and fourth in the 50m breaststroke. Aaron La won gold in the boys' 10 and under 50m and 100m breaststroke. He added fourth-, fifth- and seventh-place finishes. For girls 15 ta 17, Heather Armitage was first. in .the -100m backstroke and sixth in the 50m freestyle. Wendy Primeau was second in 50m, 100m and 800m freestyle events, and third in 200m and 400m freestyle. Julie Leswick was second in 200m backstroke, fourth in three other events and fifth in another. For boys 15 ta 17, Rick Budel was third in 50m freestyle. Also in the 'A' pool, Renee Ayotte won bronze in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events for girls 11 and 12. Peggy Hefford won silver in the 100m fly and was also fifth, sixth and eighth in other events for girls 13 and 14. In the 'B' ool, Iain Burnett won the 50m reaststroke while Sandy Henderson captured the 50m backstrake for boys 10 and under. PORT HOPE MEET At a recent swim meet in Port Hope, Whitby swimmers won seven of the 14 gold medals up for grabs fora e aups. Robyn McCulloch won five events as novice girls 8 and under champion, with teammate Jessica Rose second in the same five events. Erik van Dijk won four events to capture the novice boys 9 and 10 title; Jill Saniga also wonfour events to lead the way for novice Srls 9 and 10; Leah-Anne McInnes won two events and was second in two others to take the 'rls 10 and under title; Michael erekes was champion for boys 10 and under, after winning four events; Tiina Kallio won four events to emerge on top for girls 11 and 12; Blair Dobbyn won two events and added a second and third to take the boys 11 and 12 title. The Whitby club will host the central 'C' championshp s at Iro- .quois Park over the ay 13-14 weekend. Optimists will host junior golf tournament The Optimist Club of Whitby will host its sixth annual Junior World of Golf tournament on Sunday, May 14, starting at 1 p.m. at the Thunderbird Golf and Country Club in Ashburn. There will be four entrance levels ranging from ages 9-17. The event is one of the numerous annual youth-oriented activities sponsored by Optimists. For further information contact Jean M. Yelle at 668-5022. Bob Attersley, who purchased the Kingston junior A hockey club, has sold equal shares in the club to two business partners, Wren Blair and Don Anderson. Blair is a former general manager and coach of the King- ston rontenacs of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, and he re-activated the Oshawa Generals in 1962, later signing Bobby Orr for the Boson Bruins. Blair operated the Whitby Dunlops senior A hockey clu that won the world champion- ship in 1958. Attersley was a member of the team. Blair, 63, was also general manager and coach of the NHL's Minnesota North Stars and then president of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1975 to 1978. He owned the Saginaw hockey club from 1972 to 1981. Anderson, 52, is resident of Andon Holdin Ltd. in Stouff- ville and president of Don Ander- son Haulage Ltd., Stouffville. He is vice president of Custom Trai- 1er Manufacturing in Bowman- ville and vice president of Weigel Transport Ltd., Elmira. Anderson. a member of the board of directors of several other business enterprises, is a director of the Ontario Trucking Association and the Ontario Aggregate Producers Association. "I played for Wren for overl10 years, some of it in Kingston, and we have remained friends and business partners ever since." Blair will be managing partner of the Kingston club. Attersley and Anderson have been friends and business part- ners for more than 20 years. Anderson will be vice president of the hockey club. AttersIe said he, Blair and Anderson ave been partners in three different companies. Attersley said further announcements aout the ope- ration will be made May 21 in Kingston.
