Mclntosh When I sat down bo write this particular edition, it occurred bo me that perhaps not every reader is a 100 per cent true, dyed-in-the-wool car buff. (It was, bard for me bo believe, but.. .) So just in case some of the ternis I use are foreignb yto u, L'il be «n with a twominute Antique-and classic cars are pretty straightforward: they're old, and they have been restored bo their original condition. If they're antiques but the'e powered by newer engines, tbey're known as "estreet rods." Cars of the 1950s that have received major body modifications (lowered on the framne, the* roof "chbipped" bt make the windows smàler, etc.) are called "kustoros." Newer cars that have modifications are "customs," without the K. And muscle cars are the beefy cars of the 1960s, such as Mustangs and Camaros. That's just a rough guideline, of course, since the rules aren't always that clear eut. There are street roda that are customn cars, and muscle cars that are classics, and the list goas on and on. But that's the general idea. Since, the good weatber bas arrived, or bas at 'least threatened b, a lot of these cars are aiready maldng their way about the streets. One of the year's last indoor shows is the Durham Classic & Rod Spring Show, wbich will be held May 5-6-7 at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. And you heard it. here first: in July 1990, the association wiil be holding the Canadian Street Rod Nationals event at Iroquois Park* in WVhitby, featuring a show, cruise, dance (for participants only), games and vendors. That's three days of more than 1,000 pre-1959 cars! Youll have bo be an association member bo enter your car, so write to them now and enjoy membersbip for a full year. (Yu cian also get information on'; this year's Nationals, held in July in London.) Another club you may find of interest is the Antique Truck Society of . Canada. I immediately thought of pickup trucks only, but that's just the beginning - they also feature antique tractor-trailers, snowplows, delivey vans, dumptrucks and fire equipment. Their nugjôr show tbisyear will be June 23-25 in Keinburg, featuring an antique firefighting display. And' since it is getting warmer,,the cruise nights and outdoor shows should be getting underway very shortly. The 22-year-old finished fourth in the national 400cc production circuit of the amateur division last year, winning a race in Nova Scotia. The year is divided into national and regional races, with the national races attracting more than 200 riders. Races are held in Shannonville (near Belle- ville), Quebec and Nova Scotia. There are il races in the series held from April bo October, with six of them national races. «I'm hoping for that kind of finish this year,» says Wilson, who withhis fourth-place finish was eligible bo move into the professional ranks. The top five * finishers can move to protés- sional. But Wilson bas decided to stay amateur for another year to gain more experience. *"Next year MIl go professional," said Wilson, who races a Yamaha FZR400, witb a Honda NS400 as a backup motorcycle. His first race was in Septem- ber, 1987, when friends talked him mbt driving in a race. He finisbed fourth. "From that point on, I knew I wanted to race." Speeds can reach 115 mph duning a race, which can lead to accidents. Wilson bad a spill last year and tore a cartilage in bis wrist. With the help of a natural healtb clinic in Pickering, he is back racing. It can be an expensive. sport, according to Wilson, with costs running anywhere from $15,000 to$20,M Oa year. That is whore sponsors can help. Wilson is sponsored "by Anisoil Canada, Montreal Trust in Oshawa, Shoei Helmets, NGK sak plugs, Sheil, and Leisure World in t h e Oshawa Centre.
