The duo lost the first game 15-12, won the second 15-10 and iost the decidin g game 15-6. University of Toronto's Mel- lissa Gallo and Sandra Stapieton won the competition which indlu- ded Ontario's best under-19 players. Due to iilness, Van Patter was unabie to compete in singles competition on Friday. Van Patter is the Canadian under- 16 girls' singles champion. She and Kyie Hunter of Kit- chener are aiso Canadian under- 16 mixed doubles champions. that wowed a crowd of 4,000 in the final, Whitby Ice Fyre won their second straight Canadian senior precision skating cham- pionship over the weekend in E dmonton. "It was spectacular," said Ice ~e manager Donna Gibney of the performance by the 36 girls on tM team. "It's going to be bard to top it." Ice Fyre competed against 23 teams in the senior (ail ages) division, including runner-up Lavai, Que., and third-piace Kit- chener. Whitby Ice Angels novice (aged 14 and under) teami finished fifth overail among 24 teams in that division. Whitby Ice Elusions (aged 21 and over) finished sixth in the masters division among a large, 33-team field. I-e Fyre, the subject of a CTV documentary that is scheduled to "shown on a Saturday after- noon in the near future, proved to be a big hit eariy in the competition when they first deli- vered Ragtime, a routine they worked bard to put together in the last five weeks. The performance includes a jump, the first in precision skat- ing, that one team member lescribed as introducing "single skating entering into precision." Later Ragtime performances brought spectators running, and also earned the favor of judgès who scored Ice Fyre at 5.7, 5.8 and 5.9 out of six. "Technically, nobody could touch them," said G.-ibney of the team, crediting coach Cathy Dal- ton. As a junidr team., Whitby won three straight Canadian titles, then move d to senior iast year and won at that level. Add two novice championsips in seven teams have won seven gold at the Canadian level. The future may bring more international competition. Ice Fyre will performn in Swe- den in December, returning a visit paid by a Swedish teamn earlier this season. Ice Elusions, winners of a mas- ters' tournament eariier this sea- son, were in their second Cana- dian competition. Sheryl Snowden, teami mana- ger, had stated before the national competition that there were no expectations for a cham- pionship this year but that a titie wouid be the 'ultimate goal." Ice Elusions were fourth in a competition at Six Nations on March 11. Strong wins gold in Europe After winning a gold medai. in balance beam at t he IIungarian invitational on April 1, Whitby gymnast Lori Strong wonL threa bronze medals in a three-day competitin qs~t the Cotbus invita- tional in East Gerrnany over the past weekend. Competing against 18 coun- tries at the Cotbus invitational, Oanada's premier female gym- nast won a bronze medal overal on Friday, thé first day of the competition. On Saturday, Strong, 16, won bronze medals in floor exercises and in vault. At press- time, results from mixed pairs com- petition on Sunday were un- known. Strong will next compete at the Canadian championships Mav 18 in Edmonton.
