Lundy, A.M.C.T. Regional Cîerk I From hoôbby to career for Cheryl Serymgeo ur parlayed bher naturaltalent ands eclectic taste into a burgeoning interior decorating buiness, Conty Charmn Decor in Brooln Workting first from ber home, she then opened the store, dedicated to country crafts and art works. Although she has had no formai training, she bas developed a widespread clientele by word-of-mouth and positive reactions to her work. She started by decorating her own home about il years ago. Friends and neighbors loyed her ideas and asked her to do their homes. Finally, after many successes, she was persuaded to embark on ber own business, and ber hobby became ber career. Scrymgeour makes the first step in any job a consultation in the cient's home. Here they discuss lifestyles, decor preferences and how much ofthe original furniture they. want, to keep in the room or rooms tbat are to be redone. Next comes the choice of colora for wallpaper or paint, drapes, carpets and accent, colora. She likes to focus on a focal point in the room, anything from hubbys favorite chair to an interesting architectural design that sets the tone for ber to work around. Sciymgeour empbasizes tbat the rooms must be kept pra"cal and in keeping with the clientls lifestyles. If one is looking t t decorate with expensive and delicate antiques and bas small, active cbildren, it might be bestl te first do only the living room and keep the rest of the home open for future decoration, say five years or so down the road, wben the children are more conscious of the value of the varidus pieces. "If they've made good choices, tbey will be able te incorporate future decor witb wbat tbey chose today," she says. "At the moment, ]PM involved in re-doing a Victorian home that involves the restoration of niouldings, stained glass doors and the lovely, high ceilings that bave been stuccoed over. The search for period ligbting alone takes days of research and travel for just tbe right piece. But it's coming together slowly but surely. It will be beautiful when it is done. So far, this is the biggest challenge of Scrymngeour's busy career. She bas reliable contractors focr structural changes tbat may be required.
