Construction begins on Soccer Cit-y--, Construction bas finally begun on Soccer City's indoor soccer stadium on Sunray St. in Whitby with the stadium possibly open- in g ometimein Februl, The building of te 20,000-sq. ft. stadium was to begin in 1987, but according to one. owner, was delayed because of construction problems. "We had a problemn with the contractors an d shortage of labor but we are building now," said Cobi Stemmings, one of a n um- ber of Whitby owners that in- clude Stemmings' husband, Jim, and Isabile FelI, and another Whitby owner preferring to remain unidentified, said Stem- mings. "We are far behind in building but the contractor is only work- ing on this and we are at the roof. The playing urface astroturf, will be 170,00 s.1t in area while the stadium will seat 140 spectators. The twvo-story building will also bouse a* lounge, restaurant and a soccer pro shop. The stadium is located at the same site on Sunray St. on whicb Decom Medical Wastes Inc. for- merly proposed to build a medi- cal waste transfer station. Decom instead chose an'Etobicoke site. In June, 1987, Foîl said the price tag for the stadium was $1 million. The idea for tbe stadium came to Feil when be visited a similar facility in the town of Ancaster, just outside Hamilton. He was 83. Ho was born in Campbellford, Ont., on November 16, 1905, son of Charles and Mary (Heath) Lott. lie rarried Flora Thomp- son Lott on October 28, 1929. A resident of Oshawa for 42 years and Whitby for 41 years, Mr. Lott worked in the payroll department at General Motors. Ho was a member of St. An drew's Presbyterian Church in Whitby. lie excelled in many sports. In high school, ho played rugby, soccer and hockey and was a runner in track and field. He first played shinny hockey at the end of Louisa St. (now Adelaide) and -played professional witb Detroit O lympics, the farm club of the NHL';s Detroit Red Wings. Ho also played hockey witb Stratford, and in the old pro league with Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Kfitchener and Oshawa. ho also played for Chicoutimi, Que., and Tulsa,, Oklahoma. Ho coa- ched the Port Hope Juniors and Whitby Minors. Ho was an OHA referee for two years and played jun ior and intermediate lacrosse from 1923- 28. liJc vas one of the ficst promoters of box lacrosse in Osh- awa. Along with Art Bradley, he brought the first lacrosse sticks to Whitby from the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Mr. Lott played softball in the GM industial league and coa- ched the Whitby Stokers in the Southern Ontario Softball League for three years. Ho was an original member of the Whitby Curling Club and served on t he executive council of the Oshawa Retirees Club.
