The Durham Board of Educa- tion recently decided on the name Glen Dbu, after the home- stead that occupied the site since 1833, acco)rding to Whitby archi- vist Brian Winter', The first landowner to s ettle on the land was William'Dow, in Marcb of 1833,. There had been several landowners previous, to Dow,' but none of them had settled. Dow was born'at Auchinder- ran, in the parish of Marnocb, Banffshire, Scotland on; Feb. 11, 1777. He arrived in Canada with bis wif'e 10 children and two grand- chilciren in August of 1832 and I M spýnt bis flrst winter in Quiebec's Eàstern Townsbips. Dow was a proininent aglricul- turalist, known tbrougbout Upper Canada, noted for bis modemn metbods of farming. He was a representative, of. the Whitby, and Pickering, agricul- tural Isocieties, and an example for young farmers- wanting to learn tbe latest farming meth- ods.- He was a prominent member of tbe Presbyterian cburch and the Conservative party in Whitby. William Dow died at Glen Dbu on Aug. 2, 1855. His obituary was printed in, tbe Toronto Globe as well as the Whitby newspa- pers. The second son, John Dow, inherited the farm and worked it until sudden deatb at the age of 42 in 1858. His reputation as a progressive fanmer and agricul- turalist was almost> as great as bis fatber's. His wife, Catherine Isabella, carried on the fanm with the help of bired men until 1859. It was put up for auction but no bidders came forth, and no one wanted to rent it. In the 1860s the bouse was occupied by two families, as it had apparently been for several y'ears. The 1861 census shows Isabel la and ber five children and Robert Miller and his wife as living at Glen Dhu. On Nov.25, 1879, William Ger- rard Dow sold Glen Dhu to bis brothâtr, John Baîll*Dow- and other membens of the family. At this time, William Gerrard bougbt a faim in Manitoba. He stayed intenmittently at -both Glen Dhu and the Manitoba fanm until 1890 when be left Whitby to spend the rest of bis life in Manitoba and Saskat- chewan. The fanm was nented for many years. John Bail Dow, bead of the family in WThitby at this time, was a lawyer who became clerk of the county court and registrar of the surrogate court in WHitby n 1907. He was a miember of the Vhitby Board of Education for nany yeans and was a founder of the Provincial School Trustees' 0ssociation in Ontario. In 1905, e was elected president of the )ntario Educational Association. To necognize John BaIl Dow, ;he school was given the- name _en Dhu, for the name of bis irthplace.
