By 1968 the membership of St. John Ambulance was going strong with a male adult division #425, a female adult division .#409 and a boys division #483. The same year saw John Visser receive Whitby's Peter Perry priory vote of thanks, along with Mr. Wattam, the manager of the Victoria and Grey Trust. This award is presented to any member of the community who has extended a outstanding helping hand to the organization. 1973 saw the organization raise sufficient funds to purchase a new mobile first aid post from Seaway Motors, a new Ford econoline van. This vehicle was to survive until the latter part of 1987, and then was replaced by a generous donation of a vehicle by Branch 112 of the Royal Canadian Legion of Whitby. On Dec. 15, 1985 the Whitby branch opened their own training centre at 110 Ash St. Mayor Bob Attersley attended the opening ceremonies, cutting the ribbon with Visser, the branch chairman. On Jan. 1, 1987 the organization then expanded their location to include two classrooms or meeting rooms and a business*office. A full-time staff person was hired and St. John went into business. They still, to this date, use the garage at the Centennial Building for the storage of their mobile first aid vehicle and first aid trailer. CPR courses offered 77
