WIITB FRE RES, t.John Ambulance, DEGEMBER 7, 1988, PAGE Ai ANNIVERSARY 2 5tILANNIVERSARY WHITBY BRANCH St. ohnAmblance Mooýre, Staffrd.helped to -start St. John in Witby Irhe Whitby branch of St. John Ambulance had its beginnings when downtown businessmen accompanied by Terry Moore and Charles Stafford decided to form what was then and now known as a branch, or a unit of volunteers who would work valiantly to expand the S work of St. John Ambuance. The year was 1955. Moore was elected apresident ofthe branch, along with Stafford as president. As the years rolled by, first aid providers, or what are known as divisional members, worked diligently until they finally received recognition of their ongoing efforts. This took the formn of a chapter. On April 24, 1963 Priory in Ottawa grarited this recognition and celebrations were in order. There are records in 1964 showing the St. John Amnbulance meetings being held at King St. The Nursing Cadet Division was also formed during this period. Back in those days the maie and female aduit members were classified as ambulance and nursing members and very often had their own division of members. 1965 saw the St. John Ambulance branch desperately searching for accomodations, Desmond Newman was branch chairman, vice was Mrs. Samuel Burne and the divisional superintendent of the aduit division was Lloyd ilanna. The members soon after were given accommodation at the Centennial Building by the Town of Whitby.
