NOMMER 16, 1988, PAGE 17 Camtpean aninounces $100 millon expansion at Oshawa Centre A $100-million expansion and redevelopment of Oshawa Centre, to be completed in 1990, was announced recently by Campeau Corporation. A total of 278,000 square feet of retail space will be added, bringing the total retail erea for the mall to almost 1.3 million square feet. The new Oshawa Centre will have 300 retail outlets after the expansion, Wellington opens new insurance office Wellington Insurance, one of Canada's oldeat property and casualty insurance companies, lias opened a new office in Pickering, servicing Scarborough and Eastern Counties. This is part of Wellington's plans te revolutionize the industry with a dynamic new approach te the' insurance business. To achieve this, 25 autonomous full service business units, staffed by highly motivated insurance specialists, have been set up across the country te bring botter insurance coverage and faster processing of dlaimis to the communities in which they operate. Heading up the Pickering business unit is Marianne Wilson. She and her teain will be operating from offices at 1400 BavjIy St., (unit 20). The existing Eatens will be expanded and a fuli-scale food court established. He added that there is a strong demand for retail space in -Oshawa Centre and the expansion will allow Campeau te develop a more balanced tenant mix of fashion, specielty stores and service-oriented businesses. Oshawa Mayor Allan C. Pilkey welcomed the announcement. "Over the pat 32 years, our citizens have watched Oshawa Centre grow from a small strip plaza inte a vital retail erea in the city," he said. "The expansion will create more jobs for Oshawa and reaffirmn Oshawa Centre as the regional commercial centre for Durham." Since it opened in 1956, Oshawa Centre has more than tripled in size, with four separate expansions since its purchase«by Campeau Corporation in the early 1970s. The maIl now stretches over three-quarters of a mile and is one of the.longest in Canada. A total of 250 jobs will be created during the construction period which is scheduled to begin in November, 1988. Some 3,200 people will be employed at Oshawa Centre after completion, due in the faîl of 1990, compared to 2,500 at present. The new Oshawa Centre will contribute tax revenues in excess of $3 million per year to the city. Campbell noted that the majoity of construction will take plare below ground level in an area now ýised for shipping and receiving, /which will minimize inconveniénce te both customers and reteilers. The expansion will create 1 0000 square feet of added sp2c adjacent te the existing lower retail level. The entire centre will receive a complete upgrading, both inside and out, and skylights running the full length of the building will be installed. A new main entrence will be created on the west side of the centre, in front of the Eaton's store, to provide a central focus. Other . entrances will be enhanced and enlerged. Architect for the project is Crang and Boake bIc. of Toronto. Campeau Corporation is' a major developer and owner of shopping centres, office buildings and industrial parks in North Anierica. Its acquisition of Federated Department Stores in 1988 and of Allied Stores Corporation in 1986 remain the largest Canadian takeovers of Amnerican* companies, and made Campeau a leader in retail real estate and retailing in the United States.
