Organized by the gallery, the exhibition 'Sylva Armstrong- A Retrospective' comprises works, a miX of watercolors and ois executed from 1940 through 1988. The workslink various abstract themes explored by the artist over several years. Armstrong received ber first formai instruction in drawing from J.W. Beatty at the Ontario College of Arts summer school in Port Hope, in 1932. She continued her studies in water- color a~nd oil painting with Jock Macdonald, Alexandra Luke, Audrey Taylor and Oshawa's Jim Kraemer. Macdonald encouraged bier to "make ber paintings strong and free." Armstrong was also a frequent painting companion of Luke. A re's'ident of Oshawa for most of bher life, she bas been a generous contributor to the devejopment- of . art in tbis community. A programn director of the founding committee of Adelaide House, the YWCA in Oshawa, in 1945, sbe served as a member of 1tbe art committee, and along with' Luke and art teacher Dorothy. Van L.uven, assisted in the organization of many exhibitions at the YWCA and tbrougbout Soutbern Ontario. A member of the Lyceumn Club and Wornens Art Association, she bas actively promoted education in the arts. Sylva Armstrong: A Retrospective will, underscore the vitality and success of this artist's acbievemnent. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue. Rose Lindzon exhibition* A ten-year survey exhibition of works. by Canadian artist Rose Lindzon opens at tbe Robert McLaugblin Gallery on Thursday, July 28. The exhibition comprises 20 large canvases, acrylics and oils on canvas, executed from 1976 to 1986. Rose Lindzon, now in mid-career, bas been a par- ticipant of the Toronto 'art scene since' tbe early 1970s. She is a graduate of the Ontarlo Collège of Art, and bas studied witb Albert Franck, Dennis Burton, Graham Coughtry and William Ronald. This tutelage ties ber clirectly to Toronto painting in the 1960s, altbough ber development out of painterly abstractioni ties ber to the younger generation who admired Jack, Bush. This combination of influences helped to form Linzon's vibrant artistic personality. Her maturing as an artist will be examined in the'exhibition and accompanying catalogue, organ- ized by Robert F. Swain, director of - the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University, Kingston. .The exhibition will continue until Aug. 28. Lindzon and Robert Swain- will be present at the opening on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 7p.m. Artist's grants approved Ontario Arts Council grants were recently approved for tbree Whitby artists. A grant under the "Creative Artists in Scbools" (up to $2,100) and "Artist in &bhool and Community" (up to $4,500) caitegory -was granted to William B. Fraser of Broolin; a visual artist's grant (up to $Ï,000) was approved for Wendy Syme of Whitby; and a writer's grant (up to $5,000) was approved for Ken Roberts of Whitby. The Comiite Cultural D'Osbawa received a touring arts fund grant of $500. The Durbam Region Concert Association received a touring arts fund grant of $1,500.
