Free Press photo Accidents on the increase in Durham Whitby may remove school crossings Whitby is finding it increasingly harder to hire crossing guards and as a resuit may start removing school crossings where guards are unavailable. '"We are having difficulty finding guards. Pay is not the problem, there is just too much work out there," said transit and traffic coordinator William Grylls. Grylîs sent letters to al principals who's sehuols have crossing guards informing them of the measure. "lt is our intention (public works department) to report to council in June and recommend complete removal of- school crossing, where regular guards cannot befound," wrote Grylis. (The recommendation will now be going before council in July). lie said guards are paid $162 every other week. He identified four locations now in town where guards are not available. They are Henry St. and Dunlop; Dundas St. E. and Garden St.; Thickson Rd. and Manning and Anderson St. and Manning. Grylîs said the department is also contacting ail guards to determine if they will be leaving the job in the future. lie could not say if any other guards are planning on leaving.
