WIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 1988, PAGE 17 Chili cook->off to be i*n Orono May 28, 29 The ninth annual Great Pine Ridge Chili Cook-off bas a new sponsor.- the Lions Club of Newcastle. The Chili 0H00 cook-off, which was started in 1979 "by 0H00 Radio in Ajax,. bas had various sites in Whitby and Oshawa. Last year they moved to the Orono fairgrounds.* This proved'to be- an excellent location. When the Newcastle Lions heard that 0H00 was giving up the cook-off, they took up the challenge, at the saine location. This year the dates for the cook-off are May 28 and 29. Competitions for Texas style chili and showmanship are scheduled for Saturday and Canadian style chili competitions are cooked off on Sunday. Competitors corne from as fiar as Texas, Pennsylvania and Armstrong, Ont. The American competitors have made it an international competition for the third consecutive year. Chili cooking and showmanship are not the only events. Both days will start early (7 a.m.) with the Orono BIA putting on a huge pancake and sausage breakfast. Entertainment starts at noon on Saturday and continues until 1 a.m., Sunday. Musical offerings will include a prize-winning bluegrass band, a clogging demonstration and a well-known band from Nashville in the evening. Many other activities will be staged for the public's iDleasure during the day. On Sunday entertainment again. On aIl activities and will be staged both days a HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Brooklin Horticultural Society will hold its spring flower show and general meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 8 p.m. at Brooklin United Church. The topic will be 'water gardens.' Everyone welcome. MEETING The annual meeting of. the Durhanm branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association will take place at the Michael Starr Building, 33 King St. W., Oshawa, on Tuesday, June 7, at 7 p.m. *Guest speakers will be Bob and Judi Finlay. Topic will be communication and intimate relationships. For further information, caIl 436-8760. refreshment lounge, will be operating in the arena and on the grounds varlous caterers will be offering light lunches. Chili tubs will be available for sample tasting. Other groups involved in this effort are: the Newcastle Lioness Club, General Motors United Way Committee, Durham Lung Association, Ajax-Pickering Board SALE The Ajax (Howlers) chapter of Hearing Aid Dogs of Canada (dogs for hearing impaired) will hold a community garage and bake sale on June 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 4 Cowling Cres., Ajax. CELEBRATION Past Kfinettes and fiands are invited to the Kinette Club of Whitby anniversary dinner on Wednesday, June 8, at the Regal room in the Centennial building. DECORATION Tie annual "Decoration Dayý' service will be held at Groveside cemnetery on Sunday, June 12, 2:30 p.m. FOCUS ON WOMEN Focus on Women will hold coffee and dessert at the Salvation Army Oshawa Temple Corps, 570 Thornton Rd. N. on Monday, May 30, 7:30 p.m. Guest Peggy Mandle will speak about interior decorating. Music guest is Sandy Patterson and Christian Women's speaker Gail Thorne. Al women welcome. Admission is $3.
