OPP special squads on roads Ontario Provincial Police, including the Whitby detache- ment, now have special squads looking for unsafe commercial vehicles as well as speeders on multi-lane highways as part of a new safe driving program. "Project 5," as the program is called, was begun after a five-per cent increase in the number of traffic accidents on Toronto-area highways in the first quarter of 1988, and a 10 per cent increase in accidents in 1987 over 1986. OPP say officers have received advanced training in the use of radar on multi -lane highways. In addition to enforcement, Project 5 includes a public awareness campaign. The Project 5 committee also has represen- tation from the Ministry of Transportation, Insurance Bur- eau of Canada, Canadian Automobile Association, trucking industry and other transport groups and police departments. 'The committee is looking at other ways of increasing highway safety, such as encouraging the use of car pools and public transportation and methods of clearing accidents off major highways faster. 436-9893 * O 60 * DIV.
