"About one-third of the town was without power which was restored about 9 a. m.," says May. Oldman continues with direct dialing petition After a "few dozen" people at- tended last week's meeting to petition for Whitby-Toronto direct telephone dialing service, Tom Oldman plans another meeting for Jan. 14 to further organize support. "Lt was pretty good," says the Whitby resident about discussion last Tuesday to.get petitions, with 9,000 Whitby names, to have the Canadian. Radio-Television and Télecommunications Commission (CRTC) rule in favor of Bell Canada's application to introduce the direct dial service in place of long distance. Bell Canada actually made the application in November of 1985 but it was later deferred. Oldman says hearings could again begin in the early spring and he would like time. He hopes the Jan. 14 meeting, al~ 7:30 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Centennial building, will see the petition "really get going. " Lear Siegler eontraet seen as 4'good deal' The 380 workers at Lear Siegler voted 65 per cent in favor of a three- year contract last Sunday, Dec. 13.. "That is not a high percentage but it was due to a confusion on the part of some people," said local 222 president John Sinclair. The contract bas workers recei- ving $1 an hour raise in the first year of the deal, another 75 cents an hour in the second and 59 cents an hour in the third. .A cost of living increase will also see salaries raise by $1.78 during the three years. Ten trade workers at the chair manufacturing plant will also receive a $1.25-raise in the second year and a 25-cent raise in the third. Workers also secured a major medical plan including OHIP, den- tal and drug plans, free legal ser- vice as of July 1, 1989, short work week benefits and a $500 signing bonus. "Lt was a good deal, " commented Sinclair on only the second contract the company and the union have negotiated.
