Brooklifn resiidents oppose shopping plaza plan Some residents of Brooklin have made it clear they do not want a plaza built in their village. A petition spearheaded by Dale Copithorn, Doreen Johnson and Patti Scott opposes a shopping plaza in the north Reflections of a Golden Age By MABEL M. McCABE We are in the process of having work done on our building. This entails the sealing of windows and doors for as long as the workers deem necessary. Some folks have found to their horror, that it has taken more than a week. Of course it depends on the weather. The young men cannot do their job if it's raining hard or blowing strong. It is a job that has to be done but it is hard to be without fresh air. I'm like many others here and like to open the windows each day for a little while no matter how cold it is outside. This is just a thought to get to the point that there are many things that must be done no matter how inconvenient. We have to be prepared to make allowances so thi'ngs will be better. All things in life are geared to the same principle. As we used to say, "Banging your head against the wall hurts, but it feels so good when you stop." The Christmas season is coming so quickly that if we do not hurry we will be caught at the last minute with shopping left to do. And then the crowds will engulf all of us again. Somehow I enjoy the hustle and bustle of the plazas. They all look so festive and cheery. So I have to take my time and rest at intervals but it's all worth it. rve mentioned before that I enjoy people and people watching. There is no better time than Christmas to start. When you are frazzled and weary, even cranky, sit down with a cold drink, or tea, on a bench and watch the passersby. You can write a book about the faces you see. Some are so angry you wonder if they are getting ready for the same day you are. Others have that quiet serene look that tells you they know what this holiday is all about. Take the time to speak to someone who sits near you. Just a friendly hello and a smile might help if they are uptight. If you give of yourself at this time of year you could brighten someone's day a little. Think back. Didn't a cheery face and a smile from some other person help you get through the crush at counters and the feel of sore aching feet? I will admit the plazas make the shopping easier now. It was always so cold and carrying a load of parcels meant frost-bitten fingers by the time I got home in those long ago days. I'm glad they have a food drive for those who are hungry at Christmas, as they did at Thanksgiving. It gives us all the chance to really take part in the spirit of Christmas. I know many organizations do these things but so many feel embarrassed to accept assistance, it is a shame. There has never been a person who lived their whole life without needing a helping hand now and then. Next year it could be any one of us so we must try to make them know we care enough. This sounds a bit like a sermon but is not meant to be. I just recalled some of the lean Christmases of the past and all the wonderful folks who helped out. At this time of year I'd like to send to all of them known and unknown a grateful thank you. You taught my family what it means to be a friend. community. The petition was circulated to every home in the Meadowcrest subdivision which surrounds the proposed plaza. Of the 167 households, 157 were against construction of the plaza. Five households were in favor, and no one could be reached at another five homes. The concern was prompted by an application by A. Sacco of Oshawa for rezoning of lands bordered by Highway 7 and Heber Down Cres. an area known locally as Cashway Park, to permit the construction of a 100,000-sq. ft. shopping plaza with parking for 350 cars. The land is now zoned special purpose commercial in the Whitby official plan and residential in the Durham Region official plan. The The church school has planned a bowling party for Saturday evening, Dec. 5 to be held at Motor City Bowling, Oshawa. Those planning to go meet at the church at 6:30, to arrange for transportation. Lunch afterwards at a favorite restaurant. The Ladies Bible class and the Eleanor Knight Group of the WMS will hold their Christmas supper meeting at the church on Dec. 9. This will be in the form of a potluck supper, which will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ladies applicant is attempting to have both designations changed to C-1 which would permit the construction of a plaza. Whitby planning director Bob Short indicated the developer was interested in constructing the plaza in phases, starting small and expanding to the total 100,000 sq. ft. once services had been brought to the Brooklin area. But local residents told The Free Press they don't want a plaza at the proposed location - now or ever. "The Province has already said they (the developer) can't have an entrance onto (Highway 7), so that leaves only one other alternative," said Copithorn. "They'd have to enter from Heber Down and no one wants are askea to bring something suitable for first course, plus a dessert. Following our meal, we will enjoy a Christmas program. We invite our men folk to join with us on this occasion. The Ashburn Community Centre will hold their annual. Christmas concert on Friday evening, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at the centre. A varied program has been planned, with participation from Burns Church, beavers, cubs and scouts, The Moms and Tots and the Brooklin District Lions Club. Even Santa will be paying a visit. With her 1987 accomplishments behind her, Strong is now tuning up for that amount of traffic in a neighborhood area." Copithorn said many residents indicated the property would be a perfect site for "an old folks home," or for building smaller type homes which would match those in the surrounding area. "The number one choice, though, was to leave it as a park," said Copithorn. "The Town could buy the land and keep it as green belt for our children for years to come." The application for the proposed development is being circulated through various agencies at the municipal, regional and provincial level. Public meetings will be held both by the Town and the Region to get local residents' input.
