The Lake Ontario Secondary School Association (LOSSA) hockey league began as an experiment three years ago with three teanis: -Harwood Huskies, Denis OCÇonnor Chargers and Ajax Trjans. The three teams played in a series of exhibition games against teanis from Scarborough. "We were looking to get students involved in a school sport," says the league's chairman Derrick Moore from Harwood. In the next year, three more teams joined the league: O'Neill Redmen, Eastdale Eagles and Vanier Vikings, allowing LOSSA to advance their top two teamns to the Durham-York Secondary School Athletic Association (DYSSAA). "The calibre is there and the support is fabulous," says Moore, who saw the Redmen advance past DYSSAA and aIl the way to the Ontario finals. "The support bas been fabulous from both students and parents, says Moore, who had to turn down an application from Dunbarton to enter the league for this season because a coach had Whitby's high schools were both accepted this year and Anderson bas done wefl for a first year team, tied for first with only one loss. Henry bas got off to a slow start. Next year Moore hopes to expand the league to 10 or 12 teams, with a lot interest shown from Dunbarton, Dwyer, Bowmanville and even St. Mary's, a school which is not yet open. We've taken a,- hard lime on discipline," says Moore, claimidng it is an area that the minor hockey leagues have failed to maintain past the mdiget level.
