:, . WHItTiBY FitiE PiIESS. JDURHAM MOVES. NOVEMBER 11, 1987 Volkswagen warehouse construction begins in Ajax A groundbreaking ceremony for a new $22-million parts warehouse and service training centre took place in Ajax, Oct. 8. When completed in the fall of 1988, the warehouse, located at the southeast corner of Bayly and Church Sts., will cover 317,110 sq. ft. and employ 50 people. "We are now renting a parts warehouse in Pickering and we have a training centre in Toronto, so we needed to expand and it was decided to put both under the same roof," explains Bernice Holman, public relations manager for Volkswagen Canada Inc. Holman says the 50 employees now at the Pickering site will move to Ajax. The parts storage area of the building will feed Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche dealers all across Canada. Volkswagen Canada has the im- port rights for both Porsche and Audi in Canada. "The parts warehouse will have state-of-the-art computer technology," says Holman. She says before the warehouse was planned, Volkswagen repre- sentatives travelled to Europe to study the European method of par- ts distribution "This warehouse will bring the parts to the picker instead of vice- versa. The mountain will come to Mohammed." Carousels, similar to the system used in dry cleaning stores, will be used to bring the parts to the picker. explained Holman When completed the warehouse and training facility will make up 20 acres of the 52-acre site Holman says the parts centre has been designed to handle 75,000 Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche items with a retail value of $40- million An administrative module, which will contain the service training area, will cover 20,000 sq. ft. Holman says the training area will be used for dealerships all across Canada. But it is the recreation facilities at the new warehouse which will make it unique. Holman says an exercise room and an employee sports field will be constructed. "There will probably be a soccer field there," says Holman. Construction on the building is expected to be'completed by August, 1988 with the warehouse fully operational by the fall of 1988. Used car bargains require a careful eye and inspection Buying a used car need not be the chancy business it's often made out to be. In fact, the used car market never looked better, thanks to rising new car prices and the inevitable 40 per cent drop in value most cars take in their first three years. There are plenty of good buys around if you know what to look for. Check price range Once you've decided on size and style, zero in on a particular make and model that gets top marks in the auto magazines and consumer reports. Then check the latest red or black book price guides to see what you might be expected to pay. Your local banker or finance com- pany representative can be a good place to get information on current market prices. The classified newspaper ads will also give you a price range for a particular car. You may be wiser to pay more for a low-mileage car in excellent con- dition than to pay less for a high- miler that needs work. New car dealers tend to keep the cream of the used car crop and, since each car on the lot has been professionally serviced by on-site mechanics, theyre usually ready to roll under a 90-day warranty -par- ts and labor included or no go. A used car dealer's lot may have a wider selection, but it could in- clude the new car dealer's rejects and cars bought at auction. Used car dealers seldom have a service department, which means you'll probably have to assume that ex- pense yourself. And as with any large purchase make sure the business has been around for a few years. A call to the Better Business Bureau is a good idea. Also check with other people who have had previous dealings with the dealer. Don't buy anvthing that doesn't come with a 90-day guarantee You can'sometimes pick up a plum in a private sale, but there's no written warranty and no re- course if you pick a lemon. Never buy a car whose odometer you suspect or know has been tam- pered with. Obtain, if possible, all repair orders and safety cer- tif icates. Always road test any car you're interested in buying, new or used. Once behind the wheel, how does it feel? Do all the accessories work? Is it comfortable? How does it han- die? Are the brakes firm? Does it accelerate smoothly? Is the steering sure? If you aren't sure about buying the car, wait for a few days before making up your mind. Look for smoke in the rear-view mirror as you accelerate. Blue smoke could mean a valve job, black smoke might mean car- burator trouble. Check the car for rust, dents, paint damage and body filler on fenders and rocker panels. Windows, locks, trunk lids, hood and doors should all work smoothly. If they don't, the car may have been in a collision, meaning a possible structural damage. Check the brakes and tires for wear, and under the hood for leaking fluids. Finally, have your technician give it the onceover. He'll soon tell you if you're buying a good car or a pig in a poke.
