According to Barb Unich, vice- president of local 57 of the Ontario Nurses Association, the new con- tract gives the nurses anl increase of between 11 and 12.per cent over t he t wo-yea r term. The nurses will see an increase of $1 an hour in the first year of the contract, an increase of six to seven per cent depending on wage level, and a 4.5-per cent increase in the following year. Although the nurses have ratified the new contract, it still has to be recommended by regional council on Nov. 18. Personnel commissioner Terry Stevens said it would be inap- propriate for his department to comment on any terms of the con- tract until it has been presented to the management committee and ratîfied bycouncil. The nurses, who supervise school visits, counselling, pre-natal and parenting classes, and conduct clinics, had been without a contract since Jan 1. They were seeking a 14- per cent wage increase which they said would bring them in line with nurses working in hospitals. They began picketing on Oct. 27 but swit- ched to rotating strikes two days later to reduce the impact on patients. A second full walkout oc- curred Nov. 4. About 30 public health nurses made a sulent protest at the last meeting of regional CQ.UfCil (Nov. 4) by sitting in the public gallery during the entire session. Lloyds sued by car dealers association Local used car dealers are being caught in the middle of an "action" between Lloyds Bank of Whitby and the Oshawa Auto Auction, claimns Bob Beattie, executive director of the Ontario Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario. The association is suing Lloyd's for taking dealers' money out of a trust account made up of deposits by dealers after two auctions in Oc- tober. Beattie says dealers deposited $1 '/ million dollars following an auction held Oct. 21, then a further $1001000 following an auction on Oct. 28. Beattie says the bank then stamn- ped ail cheques NSF (non-sufficient funds t, including cheques that had been deposited on-Oct. 22. "The bank has the money but .r. thev can't use it If waq in a trust fund, not a general fund," says Beattie. He says dealers are suffering because of "some type of action" the bank has with the auction. "We really don't know what is in- volved. The bank is taking some kind of action against the auction. " Beattie says the action has hurt a number of used car dealerships. One had to mortgage his home. One local used car dealer, who has lost $15,000, said it could mean some dealers will have to close down. Beattie says the association, while suing for the money, wants to know how a bank can hold a cheque for 12 days beforesaying it is NSF. He says the suit will be for at least $2.5 million. 1ZI~ r, r a Ajax North 427-3110 London N. 519-660-1909 5t.
