On May 22 this year, both saw'a collision between a car and moton- cycle on Kendalwood Rd. at Dun- das St. E. i Whitby. After the collision, a white Dodge drove over the motoncycle. and then sped east- bound in the westbound lanes on Dundas St. Harbent, driver of a pick-up, and Bulloch, passenger, saw tbe motor- cycle oporator get up and walk to the curb, so they went* after the Dodge. Near Adelaide St. W., i Oshawa, harbert managed to get bis. pick-up in front of the suspect vebicle. But the vebicle went into the soutbbound lane of Thornton Rd. and continued away. Near Annapolis St., Harbent againgot bis truck in front of the vehicle, this time braking hard so that the suspect vehicle gently collided and was stopped. Harbent, son of Dunham police's auxilian sengeant Mike Harbert and' auxiiary constable Jenny Harbert, and Bulloch, daughter of Durhamh police suponintendent Doug Bulloch, went to the Dodge. A struggle took place as Harbert at- tempted to takre the keys away from the suspect. The suspect was forced to remain until the police arrived. Other civiian citation recipients were Paul Myers, who rescued a boy from a house fine in Oshawa last year; AI Billings, who assisted police i an "explosive situation" at a party outside. a roadhouse in Pickering last year; John Barron, who risked bislilfe in an unsuc- cessful attempt. to rescue a child from drowning in a swollen river in Pickering; Wesley Pegg an d Carl Berezuik, who pulled a semi- conscious driver from a burning truck after anaccident in April this year in Bowmanville. Also attending the banquet was Const. John VanDenBurg, the first member of the Durham Regional Police to receive the menit mark award for outstanding police ser- vice. He was'instrumental in the arrest and subsequent conviction of three people involved in a murder. Region Fitness Council1 holds workshop The Durham Region Fitness Council is presenting a fitness leaders' wonkshop on fitness for the older aduit, entitled "vigor regained". The wonkshop is designed to teach fitness instructors how to WHITBY KIWANIS PRESIDENT Ken Billington (r) and Bike Ride chairman Jan Koke present a $7,000 cheque to Judy Morine of the Whitby Cancer Society. Funds were raised in the llth annual ride, held in May, to help cancer research. Free Press photo lead classes for older aduits that are safe, motivating, and satisfying. Highlights include use of music to motivate; use of folk dan- cing and line dancing; use of chairs and smali apparatus; and how to plan for varying levels of fitness (fnom beginnen to advanced). The workshop Will be facilitated by Donna Davidson, a YWCA fit- ness course conducton who has had over 22 years of teaching expenien- ce and 12 yeans of -teaching fitness for older adults. The wonkshop.will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24 fnom 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Bobby Orr Lounge, Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Complex. The fee for the workshop is $10 in advance, or Industry site plan approved A 73,820 sq. ft. industniàl building on McEwen Dr. was approved by Whitby council recently. The land is currently vacant. The proposal was submitted by Roger J. Snmith.- According to Jeannette Bab- bington of the Town's marketing department, the building is to be divided as users require. She could not say what exact uses would be. Skating programs Programs available from the Whitby Skating Club include aduit skating and power skating for ages 9 to 18.
