Fire destroys building Fire destroyed the Whitby property maintenance building and most of its contents last Wednesday evening at Highway 12 and Taunton Rd. The cause of the fire is still un- der investigation, but arson is suspected. When Whitby firemen arrived at the scene, flames were coming from every opening of the building and along the entire length of the roof. The maintenance equipment within the building, which was in- sured, was destroyed, but some of the equipment o.utside remained in- tact, according to the department. The loss is estimated at $100,000. Man hurt in assault A Whitby man was injured last Sunday morning after being at- tacked by an assailant with a baseball bat. Stephen Raetsen, 19, of 715 Clarence Dr., Whitby, was taking home his girlfriend on Castlebar Cr. when an assailant smashed in the window on the driver's side with a baseball bat. Police say the assailant mistook the female passenger for his ex-wife. Raetsen requiréd four stitches on his nose and suffered abrasions to his left shoulder. Approximately $500 damage was done to the vic- tim's car. David Gradwell, 34, of Carnelly Ct. in Ajax is charged with three counts of assault, dangerous weapons, and two counts of mischief, according to police. Sex assault charge laid An Etobicoke man was arrested on July 24 for a sexual assault on a Whitby woman which occurred on JulylO0. Police say the man, an employee of a paving company, was held in Oshawa for a bail hearing for the assault which took place on Ap- plewood Ct. in Whitby. Free Press photo Plaza addition approved Whitby council has approved a 12,000 sq. ft. addition to a plaza at the northeast corner of Bonacord Ave. and McQuay Blvd. in the Otter Creek subdivision. The plaza was originally ap- proved in 1980 when the developer proposed to build a commercial plaza comprised of 21,600 sq. ft. The first phase of the plaza, measuring 7,500 sq. ft. was built at that time. With the 12,000-sq. ft. addition approved by council, the plaza will only comprise of 19,800 sq. ft. Expansion will be to the east and westof the existing plaza, however the developer has not yet supplied the planning department with the building heights. The expansion is to be constructed of brick to match the existing plaza. N. after Whitby council accepted a low ten- der of $949,469 for the work. The bid was from Novacor Con- struction of Queensville. The contract calls for construc- tion of approximately 900 metres of road including grading, un- derground services, curb and gut- ter and sidewalks and -oadway illumination. Watermains and sanitary sewers will also be in- stalled on behalf of Durham Region. The Region will pay $32,585 for Black tie sale in downtown Whitby merchants will be spor- ting black ties and and a limousine will be parked at the four corners during a sidewalk sale "with flair" to be held downtown Aug. 6, 7 and 8. Resident is hurt in fall A Whitby man fell from a 20-foot ladder last Tuesday while painting his home on Pilkington Cr. in Whit- by. John Grady, 41, fell face down on- to his driveway after the bottom of the ladder slipped out from under- neath him. He was sent to Whitby General Hospital and then tran- sferred to Sunnybrook Medical Center to be treated for serious head and chest injuries. He is now reported to be in good condition at Sunnybrook. Money taken after break-min Police are investigating a break and enter at Brooklin Concrete on Hwy 12last weekend.
