Civic reception and luncheon at municipal Drumm criticizes board FROM PAGE 2 Both Drumm and councillor Tom Edwards praised the separate school board for their decision to bus students across the road. "The separate board was com- pelled, because of safety for the kids, to bus them," said Edwards. He said putting a guard there would create a "false sense of security." Visser then asked if council would ask the Region to lower the speed limit on Anderson from 60 kph to 50 kph. But Mayor Bob Attersley said that when speed traps are set up on Anderson, 90 per cent ofthe people stopped for speeding are residents $6,700 raised More than $6,700 was raised in Whitby during March fundraising for the Kidney Foundation of Canada, according to Stewart Bett, who chairs the Durham Region branch. The Durham Region total was more than $31,000, exceeding the objective of $30,000. Funds rà ised go to patient ser- vices and research. r of the area. "What the parents should do if there will' be no bussing and no lights," asked Angela Fountain, a parent. She did not receive an answer. Committee has decided to take a second look at the road, and in- vestigate again, putting a guard on the street. The results of the investigation will either be presented to council this Monday or at a special council meeting on July 13 beginning at 5 p.m. Blue boxes could be here by October Those blue plastic boxes for collecting recyclable material will be distributed throughout Whitby in October, the same month as the new recycling depot is expected to be completed in Whitby. The boxes were delivered to Ajax households in May. According to Sue Crowley, operations manager for Durham Recycling Centre, newspaper pick-up has since doubled while glass and tin pick- ups have increased three to five times in Ajax. The increases have made the depot on Wilson Rd. S. more congested. "The volumes here are un- believaNie," says Crowley, adding that employees are working 10-hour days. For that reason the boxes will not be distributed to other Druahm Region municipalities until the new depot is completed. "Everything is going to come on line at the same time," she says. The Ajax boxes were delivered by Town staff and students there, an offer Whitby has yet to make. "That would be nice," she says. The boxes are free, and there have only been 13 reports of stolen boxes. Those 13 have been replaced free, adds Crowley. Whitby man dies in hospital A 20-year-old Whitby man has died at Sunnybrook Hospital from injuries he received in a motor- cycle accident two weeks ago. John Pipher, a member of the Whitby Warriors Junior A lacrosse team was driving his motorcycle south on Thickson Rd. N. Saturday, May 30, when he attempted to pass a number of cars that were stop- ped. Pipher's motorcycle then collided with a truck making a left hand turn into Algoma Orchards. He was taken to Sunnybrook where he was listed in critical con- dition. Pipher died from the injuries last week. A moment's silence was held at the Warriors home game Friday, and the team wore black arm bands. Warriors coach Bryce Jordan says team sweaters will have Pipher's number, 25, incrested on them for the remainder of the season.
