Jeschke Chiropodist ]Res idents don't want sidewalk The Town of Whitby will con- struct a sidewalk on the west side of Applewood Cres. between Bellwood Dr. and Nichol Ave. - even though residents on the street don't want it. Gerald Collins appeared before Whitby council last monday night to protest the sidewalk. He said that 15 of the 18 homes on the west side of Bellwood oppose the sidewalk. On the east side, of the 15 homes lie contacted, il object to the sidewalk whle four favor it. (He said there are 21 homes on the east side). "We just don't want that sidewalk," he said. But council rejected Collins' argument and approved the sidewalk. The public works department says children who will be walking to the new school on the north sidk of Bellwood Dr. should bu on along Applewood. The sidewalk should also be con- sidered as a mucli safer place for children to play than the edge of a roadway, notes the der i rtment. Thickson tenders considered A tender of $440,248 has been recommended by Region's works department for widening . of Thickson Rd. from *Dundas St. to Crawforth St. The tender of $481,248 by Lamco Construction Ltd. of Gormley was the lowest of six tenders submitted. But works staff reduced the tender figure by $41,000 because of an error in the quantity of surface course bot mix asphait given in the tender. Contractors should have been requested to submit a price for 200 tonnes 0f the asphalt but the tender instead showed a quantity of 1,200 tonnes. The total estimated cost 0f the project is $567,000 - $484,300 for roadwork; $900 for sanitary sewer and $82,200 for water. For the roadwork portion, the Province and Region will share $335,800 of the cost; developer's contribution $121,000; traffic signal installation $8,700; and Town of Whitby & (sidewalks), $18,000. v *PAINTING * DECORA TING* * REC ROOMS * 20 years experience, satisfac- tion guaranteed, f ree estimates. 668-0925 BROOKS, WHITTINGTON Barri sters, Solicitors & Notaries Public Helen E. Brooks, LL.B. Robert G. Whittington, B.A., LL.B. 101 Mary Street West 0 Whibhy, Ointario LIN MR 430-1755 Corridor Capers PIT STOP GAS BAR Many residents joined forces in opposition to Canadian Tire establishing a gas bar on the corner of Bowman Ave. and Dundas St. , likely to be open seven days a week, 24 hours per day, generating a traffic flow of approximately 3,000 cars a week. Within a stone's throw of the site is St. Theresa's Public Sehool. The sehool board will discontinue busing in September for most of the Corridor residents. This means a great numnber of children would be walking in the area of the proposed gas station. Are we to sacrifice the safety of our children for yet another gas bar on the Dundas strip? DEEPEST SYMPATHY Deepest sympathy is extended to Ida Nixon and family on the loss of a husband and father, Jack Nixon. Jack will be sadlly missed, he was a true friend to ail. On many occasions lie came to the aid of ratepayers and neighbors. CARA The next executive meeting of the Corridor Area Ratepayers will be held at the home of Fran Townsend, Bowman Ave., on Monday, May 4,7:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome. - . . 1
