Whitby defeated Barrie Meredith tries for spot on Redmen As weiI as his MVP honors last year, Meredith also won the CP Air- Labatt overaîl three-star award, res ulting in a free trip to the destination 0f his choice. His choice proved to be Australia, and accor- ding to Meredith, he will be leaving at the end of April, but come the last week of May will be ready to suit up and give it a whirl with Redmen. Brooklin general manager Bob Duignan, in his first year with the squad, is pulling out ail the stops. He has indicated five goaltenders are expected to try out with the club at training camp as well as two or three grads from the Whitby Warriors junior club. Duignan ad- mitted the team had to add some young players to their roster if they were to stay competitive this year. And with the demise of the major series which claimed the Redmen, peterborough Lakers and Bram- pton Excelsiors, a new schedule has been created this year which will see the home town team play 20 games. Although Redmen staff are not totally entrawled with the line- up this year, most admit it is a heck 6-3 and play Markham Wednesday night in the final game of the round- robin league'playdowns., Free, Press photo flouse *league hockey resuits ATOM MARCH 20 -21 Brook. Most of the conce rn expressed was due to a six-game road jaunt between home games. That means they will be on the road for a 29-day period between June 20 and July 19. Unlike past years when the majority of home games were played on Saturday nights at Brooklin arena, this year's schedule is spread out with four games on Saturday, three on Wed- nesday and one each on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. With Wed- nesdays traditîonally being home nights for the Whitby Warriors junior franchise, Redînen are hoping for some last minute changes in scheduling. The home opener for Redmen is slated for May 12 when the Ex- celsiors will be in town for an 8 p.m. start. With a Canadian cham- pionship under their belt after the 1985 season, and a near miss at the hands of New Westminster Salmonbellies last year, the Red- men are out to prove they can take it aIl again in '87.
