Furlong, 45, defeated Whitby lawyer, Brian Evans during what most people described as a close race at Donevan Collegiate in Oshawa last week. But 30 minutes after the ballots had been counted, Furlong had claimed the victory.' "It had to go down to the wire," said -Furlong during his victory speech. ."But one of us had to win." The day after bis victory, Furlong said it ".wasn't that close." He wouldn't give an exact tally (the ballots were destroyed after the announcement that Furlong had won). "If you caîl 50 or 60 votes close, it wasn't," said Furlong who added he wasn't too surprised at the out- corne. He said the nomination was won by collecting more members. 'II knew my numbers, he (Evans) knew his. I knew a week ago, it was just getting the members out," said Furlorig. Liberal riding. president Craig Burch said the membership was close1 to 1,400 with 720'voting at the nomination meeting. "lWe got haîf out, that lis ex- cellent," said Burch. When the an- nouncemnent of the victory came af-, ter almost two 'bours of speeches and votinig, Evans threw bis sup- port behind Furlong. "It was a good clean fight. AI Furlong is the unanimous choice as far as I'm concerned, " said Evans. "I, and al my workers, will be working for you," he told Furlong. "If you put mine and bis team together, we will have a bell of a team' I'm Iooking forward to get- tingý into the campaign," said' Furlong, wbo bas decided to take a short vacation to "clear bis head. " During their campaign speeches, both Furlong and Evans touched on the need for women's rights and both supported Bill 154, equal pay. Furlong also threw bis support behind bringing the GO train to Oshawa and bringing Canada into a more technological age. Furlong said lie expeets an elec- tion to be held this fail.1 "It could be as early as June 25 or as late as Oct. 27, " he said. Meanwhile, the Liberal Party bas set 39 nomination meetings in the next few weeks. About 25 of the 39 are sitting MP- Ps. It is expected that the Liberals will have 50 candidates named and canvassing by the time the legisiature reconvenes on April 28. THE WINNER! Whitbypair. arrested A Whitby man and woman have been. arrested by Toronto ý _poice following an investigation by the juvenile task force and, morality bureau. In May last year, police say a man pointed a gun at a 17-year-old girl and forced ber into a taxi. Another man joined them in the cab which proceeded to a motel. The girl escaped the next morning, say police. During October and November, police say a man forced a 16-year- old girl to, perform acts of prostitution for money. The money was turned over to the man. In Decernber, a man and womnan approached a man in a Toronto restaurant. An argument erupted and the victim fled the preniises. The man and woman followed.
