Nieuwendyk going strong By JANET BROWNE Witby's own hockey hero, Joe Nieuwen- dyk, continues to impressU.S. college hockey fans with bis fine scoring record in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. So far this season, Nieuwendyk bas ac- cumulated 14 goals and 15 assista for a total of 29 points during the 15 Corneil games be bas played in. This record will undoubtedly make Nieuwendyk a strong contender for this season's Hobey Baker Award, given to the most valuable U.S. college hockey player. The 20-year-old Nieuwendyk is the Ieading scorer for tbe Corneli teamà and is tied for second in the ECAC. Niewendyk's past history is similarly im- pressive, as be was ranked fourteentb tbroughout the U.S. college league for scoring last year, and received Al-Arnerican status. In '85, be was drafted in tbe second round by tbe Calgary Flames., The 6-ft.2-in., 200-b. centre is a former Whitby resident and was beavily involved in sports during bis years at Henry St. Hjgh. In bis third year at Çornell, Nieuwendyk is majoring in business management. Tied for ninth place in the ECAC, tbe Cor- neli team bas eigbt wins and il losses at this point, with eigbt regular season games remaining. Harvard continues to bold the top spot in tbe NCAA standings. Other leading college teams include Minnesota, Boston, Michigan, Lowell, N. Dakota, Bowling Green, Maine, Denver, and Lake Superior.
