Whitby was victorious in all four games as the team's cohesion and spirit were never stronger. In the first game, Whitby defeated Street- sville 8-1. Centreman Wayne Primeau, who has been having a fan- tastic scoring season, began the scoring punch with three goals and one assist, all in the first period. He was assisted by Paul Brooks and Mike Hogan. Other Whitby goals came from Derek Young with two goals, and Paul Brooks, Mat Muir, and Andre Marois with one each. Assisting on the goals were Jim Brown and Primeau with one each, Mike Wye with two, and Paul Brooks with three. Goalies Jamie Hogel and Stephen St. Amand played well and Hogel was most valuable player for the game. In the second game, Whitby defeated Pickering 5-1. Again Primeau came up with a hat trick and an assist. Brooks and defenceman Jon Raciucot added two more goals. Muir assisted along with Young who played well, gaining two assists and the MVP for the game. Goalie St. Amand played strongly in net aided by the rest of the team. In the third game, Whitby beat the York Toros 3-1 to remain un- defeated in the tour- nament. Young, Brooks, and Tim Chai scored. Andre Marois got two àssists while Hoga, Reicot, and Paul Dillon each got one. Marois was named MVP of the game. Whitby met Ajax in the championship game. Once again Whitby was victorious defeating Ajax 3-2 in a very exciting contest. Ajax tied the game with 26 seconds to go. Whitby's Paul Dillon, who had scored both Whitby goals, then scored another to break the tie with only 16 seconds left in the game, on assists from Brown and Primeau. Other assists came from Brooks, Craig Talent and Racicot. Dillon received a trophy as MVP of the cham- pionship game. The Whitby minor atoms, sponsored by Checker's Variety, go to Newmarket on Jan 22 to compete in the Inter- national Silver Stick. Novices advance Whitby major novices received strong goaltending and defen- sive play to win a silver stickchampionship in Ajax over the holidays. The Whitby team, sponsored by Nash Aluminum, dropped their opening game 1-0 to Richmond Hill but bounced back with three straight wins, including an exciting final, to become novice AA representatives for Durham and area in the Silver Stick tournament upcoming in Detroit. Whitby got sen- sational goaltending from Matt Norton and David Ayres. Norton played the first game ,and most of the second game won by Whitby 9-0 over Brampton. Brian Scott was most valuable player against Richmond Hill while Stephen Blais won honors in the decisive .win over Brampton. Brian Lodge, Gavin Prout and Stewart Adam each had two goals in the win over Brampton, with Matt Cardwell, Brian Scott and Cory Brick getting the others. Steve Blais had three assists while Brick, Jim Boyd and ean Saunders each had h thi vard i . ~lie tlàîrd gui.. . - effort earned him most valuable player honors and a 2-1 win for Whitby. The win was especially sweet for Whitby as Pickering is one of the top teams in the regular league. Against Pickering, Biais scored late in the first period, assisted by Brick and Scott. Robbie Beesley made it 2-0 in the middle of the third period, from Scott and Saunders. Pickering poured it on and finally scored with- two minutes left in the game. In the final, Whitby faced a Newmarket team which had previously won the three games between the two clubs, ail by one goal, in regular season play. But Whitby turned the tables in the tour- nament, winning 1-0. Biais was selected as MVP. BricK and Lodge assisted on Blais's goal in the Newmarket game. Jodi Sinden, Nancy Teasdale and Angie Mitchell on Europe tour By TRAVIS LINDGREN Whitby hockey player Kevin Mitchell may not aspire to an NHL career but would very much like the experience of playing Canadian Olympic hockey. "I wouldn't want to play professional but I wouldn't mind playing Olympic hockey," said Mitchell, now playing junior C. Mitchell played last season for the Whitby major bantam team and now plays for the Ux- bridge Bruins. In the first 18 games with the Bruins, Mitchell has scored four goals and assisted on five. "The guys on the team are really good and the coaching staff is great," said Mitchell. He has previously won KEVIN MITCHELL most valuable player awards and player-of- the-game awards. Mitchell and the Bruins were just about to return from a European tour where they played against seven various teams. At press time, the team had won their first six games and were just going on the ice for their seventh. Three of the games were won by wide margins of 19-3, 16- 2 and 8-0.
