Jensen, known as "Bud" by the players, has been around minor hockey since his junior years. Shaydon Santos and Jay "Jaybird" Stewart are the goaltenders. "A pair of goalies like these two are pretty hard to come by," says Lylyk. The team has a 2.00 goals against average while scoring about 3.5 goals a game on average. The forward unit is made up of the "Bud" line - Mark Babony, Sandy Cohen and Scott MacDonell - named af- ter Jensen; the Win, loss for minors Whitby Minor atoms had a win and a loss in two recent games. The first in Ajax proved to be a frustrating 6-1 loss for the Whitby team which could not get the puck in the net. Meanwhile Ajax played a very strong game. Whitby defenceman Craig Talent assisted by Wayne Primeau and Paul Brooks, spoiled the Ajax shutout. The following day, Whitby hosted a game with Richmond Hill and defeated the visitors a 14-2 score. Difficulties experienced by Whitby the day before in Ajax totally disappeared, as the hosts were much more confident and zealous. Defenceman Mike Wye began the scoring punch with a strong shot from just inside the blue line. The Wayne Primeau - Derek Young - Paul Brooks line was over- whelming with Primeau getting five goals and two assists; Young get- ting two goals and four assists and Brooks get- ting four assists. The Paul Dillon - Mat Muir - Jim Brown line did well, too, with Dillon and Muir each getting two goals and Brown coming up with two assits. The Andre - Marois - Jeff Montaigue - Tim Chai line also had scoring punch. Marois scored once and assisted twice, while Montaigue scored once. Tim Chai played his usual strong game digging out the puck when it was needed. The Whitby defence played a strong game, and along with goalies, Jamie Hogel and Stephen St. Amand, kept Richmond Hill's score down to two goals. Craig- Talent earned himself three assists. Trainer Larry Pogson describes the team as hard-working, after having treated numerous minor injury complaints during games. The major AA team, sponsored by Algoma Orchards, has par- ticipated in one tour- nament so far this à eason, gaining two ties and a loss in the Oc- toberfest tournament in Kitchener. The team has encoun- tered some bad luck by losing out in the selec- tion draws for other tournaments. "It's not whether you get your application in early enough anymore," says team manager Mary Ann Santos. "It's whether you get your name picked out of the hat at selection time." The atoms will be heading to London, Ont. over the Christmas holidays and then on to Belleville, Markham, Napanee and perhaps Ottawa in the new year for tournament play. Paul LeClair and Kirk Rodrigues have come up to the team from the Whitby B team for the past few weeks and have contributed to the team's success. Brooklin Esso cruised to an 8-2 win over Lon- don Life in the final to take the consolation championship in thé Whitby Optimist-Minor Hockey atom tour- nament held over the weekend. Brandon Wall, a speedy Brooklin for- ward, won Most valuable player honors for the team in the final against the Bowman- ville team. Oshawa harmony went.undefeated to cap- ture the tournament championship. Oshawa outscored Lange's Photo of Bowmanville 12-6 in a wide open final, with Byron McQuay earning most valuable player honors for Oshawa. The two teams had earlier met in their opening game of the tour- nament, Oshawa coming out on top 8-7 in another high-scoring af- fair. Brooklin lost only one game, a close quarter- final match, to get to the consolation final. Brooklin edged Valen- tino's 5-4 and then J&J Sharpening 3-2 in their first two games. ken- nedy Sports fell 5-2 to Brooklin in the third game. MacNeil Furnitura gained a 7-5 victory in the quarter-final to send Brooklin to the con- solation round. In the consolation semi-final, Brooklin edged Midas 4- 3 to reach the final against London Life. London Life tied MacNeil 1-1, defeated Harman Cordova 8-1 then lost to Lange's Photo 2-1 to get to the consolation round. Lon- don Life downed VG National 5-2 in the semi- final. After an opening game loss, Lange's won 6-1 over Kameka Foot- wear, tied ITT Cannon 2-2 and edged London Life 2-1 to move to the championship semi- final. They defeated J&J Sharpening 5-3 ini that contest to reach the final. Petite B's take silver in ringette Whitby petite B team captured a silver medal in a recent ringette tournament in Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec. Mary Beth Challoner -led Whitby with 13 goals ih the four games played by Whitby in the tournament. Leslie Grenon had five goals, Kim Guymer scored four, Lisa Drake had three and Kim Mathers, two. Whitby downed Beaconsfield 11-5, tied Pierrefonds 3-3 and then skated by Dollard 10-2 to reach the final. Cumberland won 5-3 in a close final game to win the gold. Leigh Anne Copeland was steady in the Whit- by net, helped by a strong defence. Whitby's junior B ringette team also com- peted in the Quebec tournament, winning two of four games. - Returning to regular season action, the petite B team rolled over Etobicoke 21-1 in a game played Dec. 20. Challoner poured in eight goals and set up nine other goals. Mathers scored three times and also had nine assists. Guymer and Grenon each scored three goals while Lisa Drake and Jennifer Harold each scored twice in the rout. Guymer also had fou' assists. Whitby junior B tear lost a 5-4 game tc Mariposa, also on Dec. 2Q. Jennifer Cooper, Leanne Muir, Nancy Teasdale and Christine Smith scored for Whit- by. The tween B tea m from Whitby got their only goal from Shanron Nichols in an 11-1 ioss to St. Catharines. Barrie also defeated the tween B's 7-2 in an exhibition game. Nichols scored both Whitby goals. Whitby novice ringet- te team got seven goals from Andrea Babony in an 8-2 victory over Oshawa. Stephanie Nichols had the ot1ler Whitby goal in the ganìe played Dec.21. Belles got two goals from Kelly Caldwell, her first of the season, to defeat Warkworth 14-4. Caldwell also had five assists. -Paula Barrack scored five goals and picked up an assist while Leanne Ellis scored four goals and had one assist. Michelle Fowlie had a goal and five assists. Mary Lou Spencer had a goal and three assists and Tammy Bates, a goal and two assists.
