Barnes tied for third- fourtb place, with a 2%- 1% record, with' Er- manno Muignat of West Hil. Both are members of the Agin- court-West Hill- Pickering-Ajax-Whitby -Oshawa(AWHPAWO) Chess Association, and Mucignat is the first club member to earn the status of national can- didate master (for- merly national expert)., Barnes earned a rating of 1871 to gain class A status. A player gains candidate master status with a rating betWeen 2,000 and 2,199. A national.master has a rating of more than 2,200. Mucignat became national candidate mnaster when he gained a ratlng of 2,002 for a, firat-place finish, with a 5-0 record, in the Mikhail N. Tai Tribute chess tournament. But be dropped back to a class A rating with bis third-fourtb place finish in the Petrosian as well as a mediocre performance in the Scarborough Labor Day open tournament. Matbew Davidcbuk, 14, of Asbburn, was fifth in the Petrosian tour- nament, to earn a 1,611 rating and class B status. Davidcbuk had a record of 211/2. Another Wbitby player, Michael Szilagyi, currentlybholds down second place in the association's open championsbips, being held fromn October till mid-December, for aspiring B, C and D players. 'Szilagyi, with a record of 2-0, rates 1,660 for class B. He trails James Holden of Oshawa wbo bas 1,662. Davidcbuk, wlth a 1-1 record, is fif- th. The favorite to win the open title is Holden. But tournarnent arbiter John Puusa, secretary- treasurer of the association, predicted a close race between Holden, Szilagyl, Dan Allen of Oshawa and >Maurice Smith of Scar- borough.
