United Edltor's Note: This is thse flrstlin a series of stories about United Way volunteers wbo are worklng on this fail's fundraising campaign. Ten yesrs working on tbe Newcastle-Osbawa- VWbitby United Way budget review commit- tee bave convinced ac- countant Howard Smith that every dollar donated during the Jcharity's annual cam- paign is money well spent. Every yesr after thse campaign concluded, Smith and bis fellow committee members would sit down and assess the budget requirements of eacb 4and every one of the United Way's more than S40 agencies. The pur- pose of the exercise is to ensure that esch agen- cy's requirements are met without duplication or over-spending at the expense of other equally important United Way agencies. It was a demandlng job but one for wbicb Smith con- siders himself well suited. [Way volunteer «Iguess I got involved in the budget review committee because It was accounting orien- te&~ It's sometbing 1 en- joyed doing. I was using the talents that 1 have in a service to the corn- munlty," said Smith last week. This yesr Smith has branched out into a new ares of the campaign but it's one that ls stili closely tied to bis chosen profession. During the coming weeks Smith, a partner in the firm Davidson and Smith Cbartered Accountants, wili be serving as a can- vassing captain respon- sible for canvassing al tbe accounting firnis in Newcastle, Osbawa and Whitby. Smith estimates there are probably as many as 20 firms and eacb one sbould bave by nov received a package of United way promotional material explaining what the campaign is ail about. It's Smitb's job to follow up the promotional material witb a visit and a request for donations. "1'Im making sure thse partners make a donation- and canvass their employees for wbatever they cao con- tribute,"' said Smitb. Altbougb he bopes to convince bis peers in tbe profession to make a donation up-front, Smith said employees in the fir-ni can make a pledge and arrange to have it taken out of tbeir wages in smafl paymenth over tbe coming yesr. However, accountants and their employees across the district chose to contribute, there's lit- tde doubt tisat Smitb will prove a convincing ad- vocate for tbe United Way and he's an- ticipating a good return for his efforts. "Working on the budget committee was an interesting experien- ce and it convinced me that the dollars donated were being well spent. Tbat's basically what I'm telling people. It's a good cause," said Smith. :BY FREE PRESS,WEDNESDAY, OCT0OBER 1 , 1986, PAGE 2? Corridor Capers By MARY MCEACHERN CaIl 725-967 with Items for ihis coumn.
