The 14-year-old cap- tured gold medals in the vault and beam exer- cises plus a bronze medal for ber floor routine. Her third gold medal was for overal performance. Strong travelled to China last weekend as a member of the Canadian Gymnastic team of which she is a two year veteran. A gymnast since she was seven, dloser to home, Strong is a mem- ber of tbe Osbawa Gemnini Gymnastic Club. Her teammate, Christina McDonald, also made the trip to Canada, bringing home a gold medal on the. bars. The two area gym- nast's performances helped the Canadian teamn place third over- aIl in the Pacific Allian- ce meet. "Before the com- petition I felt pretty good and I had been working bard but I didn't really know what to expect," said Strong taking a five minute break from a practice session at the Oshawa Club on Sunday mon- ning. Strong was at the club Sunday for ber regular . practice following ber neturn to Canada tbat Friday. Reflecting on the competition, Strong said she was very happy with her performance. "The people were very friendly and most of them spuke English,"~ said Strong. But once in a wbile* she said team members came across someone who couldn't speak Englisb and the next haîf bour was spent in total confusion. A grade nine student at Anderson Collegiate Higb School, Strong practices at tbe Oshawa Club Monday Wed- nesday and iriday from 1 to 5 p.i, Thursday nights and Sundays. The 14-year-old has no intention of falling behind in her school work and plans to attend university in the future. Gymnastics are also in the talented youngster's future. She -plans to make ap- pearances at the 1987 World Gymnastics Competition and the 1988 Olympics. Strong's next inter- national meet is ten- tavily scheduled for November in Japan. Whitby Girls Soccer teams By MARY AGNES CHALLONER The Durham Girls Soccer League held its Annual Cup Day in Scugog on Saturday, ,Sept. 20. Five teams from Whitby had reached the finals in four divisions: Squirt, Atom, Mosquito B and Peewee B. In the Squirt (under 8) division, both finalists were from Whitby.
