WHITBY FREE PRESSWEDNESDAY, JULY 9. 1986 PAGE 3 Study says Lynde House move By MIKE JOHNSTON Free Press Staff Phase one of the- Witby Historicai Society's feasability study on a museum for Whitby is in, and the resuits are still Incon- clusive as to wbether LyndeHouse, which tbe town wil soon move ta Cullen Gardens, would be able ta house a museuni. "'These are just the conclusions of a relocation analysis and not . a needs assessment," said chafronan of the study and vice president of tbe society Rod Angevaare. The $28,000 study is being conducted by Marshall, Macklin, Monagban who will present the second phase of the study to mhe society on July 11. Angevaare said the resuits show that the bouse falis below the Ontario Building Codes requirements of 100 pounds per square foot for a standard museurn fadility. However, be suggested mhat work could be done on mhe ground floor to nieet that requirernent. 1The second phase of the study ta be com- pleted wWi teil the 3ociety if mhe Lynde House can bouse a museumn, if it can, whetber or not the Lyn- de House should be located at Culien Gar- dens; if, not, where it should be located; and would mhe Lynde House be a part of that Museum? Meanwhile, the town bas aiready begun preparations ta move the bouse. "IWbat mhe rest of the study wil say is ail hypothetical. Council bas decided ta move the bouse ta Cullen Gar- dens. The decision bas been made," said coun- cil's representative on mhe society, Marcel Brunelle. Brunelie said the town is currently negotiating witb Len Culien, owner of Culen Gardens and mhe town bas contacted a mover who bas agreed ta move the bouse at a cost of $36,000 ta tbe town. The mover wiil also construct a new basement for the bouse at Cullen Gardens at a cost of $17,600. Brlnging the total coot of the move ta $54068. "The same (quote) we got on moving it two years ago," said coun- cillor Brunelle. "Councl is commit- ted tWo-Mpnve it," said Mayor Bob Attersley. He said coundil would not listen ta the recom- mendation in the study concerning the bouse "1unless mhere was something reaily strang," 1It And sbould the study recommend that the bouse be situated at Centennial Park "no way will the bomne move. ta Centennial Park or Rotary Park," said the Mayor. Brunelle said the study's findings that the bouse is structuraily sound and can ba moved was known ta the town before council passed mhe motion ta accept ownersbip of the bouse from Wittington In- vestments and move it ta Cullen Gardens. *",Tbe moving ,of the bouse is a foregone con- clusion and that (Cullen Gardens) is were it is going, " said Brunelle. Brunelie said that through aIl the negotiations witb Cullen the society wili bave in- put as ta what is going on, a gesture wicb pleases the president of the society, Bill Oyagi. "lWe bave agreed ta co- operate with mhe town and Cullen and bave asked them ta keep us involved in the discusson. safe But Oyagi said that if the town stili wants the society to operate the bouse, whetber it be as a museum or a historic house, "lwe will require certain things." Oyagi saîd the society is planning to send a let- ter ta the town thanking them for saving the house. But wile the bouse Will be saved, Angevaare said the study concludes that a couple of important items will be iost when the bouse is moved - the basemnent and the set- ting. "The overali architec- tural integrity of the building, including its original foundations, sitting adjacent ta the Old Kingston Road for the past 175 years and its relationship ta the inimediate surrounding landscape, make Lynde House an unique heritage property in tbe context of the Province of Ontaro," reads the SEE PG. 8 Draw winner Lindsay Smith, a sales representative wimh Harvey Mintz Ltd.
