WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY. JUNE Il. 1986 PAGE 21 Witnesses erreet church m only two days By MIKE JOHNSTON Free Press Staff Young and old, men and women - ail of them volunteers - devoted their time last weekend to. accomplish the seemingly impossible. The project was the new Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses on Rossland Rd. and it started taking shape almost immediately. First the frame then the insulation, then the brick, ail parts of the whole pieced together with 'experience and dedication. The workers didn't mind the ramn, or the wind, they knew they would be working ail weekend and that comradery made' the bricks seem a littie lighter and the muscles less tense. The Jehovah's Wit- nesses can be proud of the Hall they built during the weekend because indeed it was iride that spurred them on. The first nail was hammered in shortiy af- ter 6 a.m. Saturday morning and by Sunday at 4 p.m. the new Kingdom Hall was com- pleted outside and iv. On the outside lhe building stood tail and straight and on the in- side the carpeting was down and the benches were in place. "This project is two- fold," said Robert Pengelley who was in charge of media relations. "First it is a spiritual thrust and second we get a better building because a lot of skilled people are working." But it wasn't only the men and women working on the building that made the weekend a tremendous success. The weekend was well organized, shuttie buses driving workers to and from the hall, children carrying food and drinks ail around the site, first aid areas, secuity, people in charge of supplies and even the people taking care of the parking, con- tributed to the success of the project. "Everyone here. is a volunteer, we are here because we have a sense of purpose and we don't cali a mistake a mistake we cali it an adjust- ment," said Pengelley. He said the quick- build method for the hall is used worldwide and in Canada, halls have been built in Ot- tawa and Port Credit using the method. Even the crane to lift the wooden frame was on boan, said Pengeiley. More than 1,000 volun- teers worked on the hall and when it was com- pleted in less than two days, it had 180 seats, a classroom, a cloakroom, two magazine rooms and two restrooms.
